THE television presenter Ian "****o" ****son is poised to return to Ten, the network he quit at the height of his popularity as a judge on Australian Idol.

The network is hoping he will return to Australian Idol.

Ten is expected to announce ****son's appointment when his contract with Seven expires.

****son has been at Seven since he quit Ten in 2004, hosting My Restaurant Rules and Celebrity Survivor. He also appeared as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

The Herald understands his return to Idol will not displace radio broadcaster Kyle Sandilands, who was recruited last year to fill ****son's shoes.

According to sources, Ten is considering four judges - ****son, Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Mark Holden - for Idol's 2007 competition.

Australian Idol is based on the British television series Pop Idol, which was created by British television executive Simon Fuller. While the US and Australian versions of the format feature only three judges, the original British version does have four - record company executive Simon Cowell, record producer Pete Waterman, radio broadcaster Neil "Dr" Fox and publicist Nicki Chapman.

The finale of this year's competition, in which Damien Leith beat Jessica Mauboy to the winner's crown and record contract, was watched by 2.16 million viewers.

****son moved to Australia in 2001 to work for the record company Sony BMG. As a judge, ****son's was tough. He famously told contestant Paulini Curuenavuli to "choose more appropriate clothes or shed some pounds".
