CANTERBURY EDGING CLOSER TO A DECISION ON DES HASLER’S FUTURE WITH THE CLUB
Paul Crawley, The Daily Telegraph
CANTERBURY chairman Ray Dib is adamant he has not spoken to a rival coach about taking over Des Hasler’s job for next year.

That is not to say Hasler is safe because Dib said the Bulldogs “owe it to Des” to make a decision as soon as possible.

While Hasler’s assistant Jim Dymock has thrown his hand up for the job, Canterbury’s premiership-winning forward Dean Pay has been widely speculated as most likely to take over if Hasler is sacked.

“That is one thing I can honestly say; I have not spoken to one coach at all,” Dib said.

“Have I been approached? Yes, I have been approached.

Hasler’s future is up in the air despite re-signing earlier this year.
“I have been approached by certain managers and I have said there is nothing to discuss at this stage.

“I have not spoken to any coaches at all.”

Dib also said Dymock’s public statements on the weekend would not go against him if Hasler survived.

Dymock surprised everyone when he filled in for Hasler at Saturday’s pre-game media conference and announced his intentions if Hasler was let go.

“To be head coach of a side that I’ve spilled blood for would be an honour for me,” Dymock said.

“I’d definitely put my hand up.

“If that opportunity comes, I feel I’m ready.

“I’ve been coaching for 13 years, so I think I’ve put the time in.”

Asked about Dymock’s comments, Dib said: “I think Jimmy was innocent.

“Maybe the timing wasn’t good.

“But I just think he wanted to express that he has desires to be a first grade coach one day and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.”

Dib said the Bulldogs would hold their presentation on Thursday night and then move as quickly as possible to conduct and conclude a post-season review.

“He has a two-year contract and we are just going to do a review,’ Dib said.

“From there we will decide what needs to be changed.”

Canterbury scored an emotional win over the Dragons on Sunday.
Dib also said the club had not decided if the review would be internal or external.

The Bulldogs are in a predicament in this respect given Raelene Castle has resigned and her replacement Andrew Hill won’t start until after his commitments with the Rugby League World Cup are finished in December.

Asked how quickly the review could be completed, Dib said: “I can’t answer that.

“It depends on how we decide to go forward with it, whether we get someone externally to do the review or we do it ourselves.

“I have said to the players and staff just to enjoy the week until Thursday night.

We have a scheduled board meeting for the end of the month but I will speak to them on Thursday night and have a chat over a drink.

“We owe it to Des and everyone.

“Timing is so crucial at this time of the year.

“I understand that.”

Dib loves the media, which other chairman speaks so much.

Basically a repeat of what happened last year where there was a "review". Hope that something actually happens from this "review".

Was thinking the same thing,

It's going to be very interesting to see how we go next year,

I'm with @Mr Invisible
I think Des is safe heading into the 2018 season

The last 3 wins took some heat off Des I think.

I won't even begin to speculate what our starting team will be.

With the players we have let go, and the ones we have coming in and coming through the ranks. The possible combinations are plentiful.

As as such, so is our possible game plan even with Des as coach.

Whilst I'm pissed with our decline, I'm excited to watch our rebuild take shape.

What concerns me most is he never said des has " full support of the board" if that was the case we know des would be well and truly fucked.

If he's saying there's a decision to make, then that means Hasler is gone. There really shouldn't need to be a decision to make though, it's fucking clear as day we need to sack the ****.

It's pretty clear Des not going anywhere
If Des gets punted then Dib has to step down, and he knows it.

dib is protecting Des to protect himself

I doubt Dib will get re elected next year

The new board will end up having to Deal with the Des issue,
But by then the season would have been started

I wondered that also
But I think it's Dib play on words

I stand by what I said before
Dib can't let Des get sacked or it will reflect poorly on him and his chances of re election next year.

Dib already made a decision and he re-signed Des. If he's saying that there's still a decision to make then he's gone. Not sacking Des will make him look worse.

I think that's the thing mate, if he really is protecting himself he will sack Des and try and save some face with the fans, I think if he sticks with him, he's fucked either way.

My head says to think like @SOH but my heart wants Hasler gone by Friday....at the latest.

Dib said he's got a contract, what he didn't say was that there is a top 8/2017 clause! Des is gone and Dib will look smart for signing Des with said clause. Coach problem will be solved and rival ticket will evaporate.

The only thing that gives me a glimmer of hope Hasler might be gone is that Singe left and he might have seen the writing on the wall.
