Sounds bad on first reading.

what’s the context here? Is this published in a book? Who is the source?
It’s not only sourced in a book it is recorded.. Watch and listen to the video.. Yes I know this clip is from CNN renowned and relentless critics of Trump, but the recordings were agreed to by Trump with the author of the book, Hacky refers to..

Just read the CNN article and listened to the snippets.

Trump said:
"I always wanted to play it down because I don't want to create a panic.
Personally I don't see an issue with this line. Any president/head of state/prime minister would all tell you the same thing about how you deal with matters of national security. You certainly don't whip your population into a frenzy by panicking them. If you did this, the consequences would be far worse through unintended health outcomes, potential for violence and looting, panic buying (we all saw what happened here) etc etc.

I'm unsure of what the writer is trying to say here:

CNN said:
O'Brien's deputy, Matt Pottinger, concurred, telling Trump it could be as bad as the influenza pandemic of 1918.

At that time, there were fewer than a dozen reported coronavirus cases in the US.

Three days later, Trump announced restrictions on travel from China
If they're trying to make out Trumpy handled it poorly - why do they say that Trump announced restrictions on China within 3 days of being told. Wouldn't this prove he acted in a reasonable time and did the right thing?

Not defending the US response because I'm sure it could have been better, but I just dont see how this article is scandalous or big news? Can someone explain?

The point being made is you need to prepare people, you don’t just blow it off in the hope it doesn’t hurt your re-election chances.

As a leader it is your job to present the facts to your public in a way that doesn’t incite panic. How do you do that? Firstly, you be assertive and strong in your convictions and knowledge based on the facts and advice you have...you don’t deny, or play down the severity of something. Secondly, you present a clearly defined strategy to combat the problem. Thirdly, and importantly, you continually emphasis we will get through this together, as one. You aim to nullify the panic by emphasising people are not alone in a crisis, they are part of whole, they unify, and together as one they will overcome such a crisis. That’s what the good to great leaders do in a time of crisis, they don’t hide or avoid, they take charge.

Incidentally, too, it wasn’t necessarily Trump’s own decision to ban travel with China, but his advisors, which don’t get me wrong was a good decision Unfortunately for the President these same advisors who were not around when his comments about the virus were recorded. Hence we get an undiluted Trump.

Fair enough. I don't personally think Trump did a great job with COVID. But there is important context when you discuss COVID in the US.

Almost the entire reason why America did so poorly (number of deaths was because of New York). New Yorks problems were entirely of the making of the NY Governor Andrew Cuomo (democrat) who decided it would be a good idea to for elderly people in aged care who test positive, to be sent BACK IN to aged care (and subsequently the virus went nuts in aged care literally murdering thousands of elderly).

Actually if you look at: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

The worst three results in America (by deaths per million) are: New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey - all democrat run states.

But overall, I do agree with you guys that Trump's COVID response has not been flash.

India getting close to 100k a day ,they are in for a world of shit
India's numbers are getting pretty crazy. Within a few days they look like they will be having about 100,000 new cases per day.

America has been on a downward trend for about two months now which is a good thing.

July 21st they averaged 68,000 new cases per day
August 5th 1,170 they averaged new deaths per day

As @ today:

38,101 new cases per day
737 new deaths per day

I can't believe this story.

This girls dad died in Queensland and she has been banned from attending the funeral.

This should be a good issue to unite lefties and conservatives because regardless of politics, everyone is surely human enough to recognise that attending your dad (or Mums) funeral should be fundamental in this country. But alas, sadly it is not.

I've been in Darwin this week. Once you get through the covid security at the airport, the place is as if covid isn't happening. Only reminders I had were screens between the pokies at the casino and the lack of tourists.

Cuomo definitely screwed up, but oddly enough the virus doesn't target only Democrat states and it didn't spread through those states because they are Democratic states. Although I know you're only saying that in Jest as no one would be stupid enough to think that a virus spread through a state because it's a blue state (Republicans woulda shot that there virus *spits out chewing tobacco*

The reason those states are up top is due to how transmission works. NY and Jersey having the highest as NY is a tourist capital, and Jersey is next to NY. It's actually where much of the New York workers live. The other states are surrounding states of NY and NJ.

It's the same reason California got hit so hard. Tourism capital. But due to the low population density it didn't progress as fast as the Eastern states. I think it's also why we're going to see the US numbers going down for a while until we get back into the full swing of things as the lower density states won't get hit hard and the higher density states are in lockdown.

I think it has united most people. At least, most of my lefty friends and righty friends are all attacking Queensland over their border policies. Especially when you look at the recent case where a woman's baby died because they wouldn't let her go to a hospital in Queensland.

Yep it's disgusting seeing what governments are doing to individuals.

The hypocrisy and double standards are staggering. Hundreds of AFL players, officials and family members all allowed into Queensland to stay at a nice resort. While individuals can't even get into Queensland to attend their dead fathers funeral.

I wonder how many AFL players will protest about this issue.....plenty of them love protesting and complaining about 'BLM' though.

Thats just not true about the baby loss and further highlights the Murdoch bias press which people actually believe!

Majority of Qlders are overwhelming in favour of border closures and its the Chief Health Officer who makes ALL quarantine decisions in Qld. That lady is allowed to visit her family and view her father..but not attend the funeral. Its terrible the suffering of families but she is coming from a hot spot but its a pandemics fault not Dr Jeanette Young or Premier.

Anna Alphabet has been very careful to de-politise this aspect of C19.

It's not fake news. It's still under investigation. Queensland are blaming her and saying she chose to go to Sydney, but the NSW border force are very adamant that they were informed not to give her access without full quarantine.

Turner Freeman are currently handling a litigation case for it with either NSW or QLD government to be sued due to the loss of life.

This is the situation presented fairly by ABC below.

Qld has had NSW south western Sydney people drive to Canberra and fly in that way. Hence now ACT is designated a hit spot.

Qld has had an influx of people breaking border restrictions driving days out of their way to come in via far western Qld from NSW. Some with C19, some without.

Many have been caught but no doubt theres more that haven't.

I myself have not been able to attend my brothwr in laws funeral in NSW because of guarantine and his own daughter who is in NZ couldnt attend. Theres thousands of people affected one way or another.

It must be a terrible responsibility to have to make life and death decisions. You cant keep everybody happy. They allow this lady to go to the funeral then everybody has the right to demand entry for very important reasons ....and there goes the border restrictions keeping us somewhat safer.

Our current outbreaks are traced back to the 3 "botox" women who attended the Melbourne party and surreptitiously flew back with gang help. This virus gets away.

We had one lady at a juvenile centre positive. Unknown source although they suspect the 3 dills. Now its spread to thousands in contact tracing and hundreds of businesses closed, cleaned plus jails etc. Schools closed.

In Qld life is fairly normal except for Logan/Ipswich area. Lots of people are travelling within the state. Borders open to other states except NSW, VIC, ACT.

Why would we want to jeopardise all the hard work and sacrifices already suffered. A second wave here would devastate our economy even more.

The AFL put a Covid plan to the Govt. After the Chief Health Officer made amendments she was happy with, they were given approval to take over the resort for their 2 week isolation. Same wirh Tom Hanks. The Premier wants the income from the AFL GF and the movie industry has had their Covid plan approved as well. The optics might look bad to some but it has been carefully considered by Dr Young and the state needs the jobs and income.

I feel terribly sad and upset for everyone impacted in all kinds of ways but this is a multi billion dollar pandemic that is being dealt with and if the health authorities feel that a 2 week isolation is required to save the greater public then thats whats needed.

Qld is not blaming her. She was given the wrong info from her medical team in NSW and did not have to isolate for 2 weeks.

I guess it will come out in the court the truth of the matter.

Qld Chief Health Officer speaks on the sad tragedy and the "National" Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth said the case was tragic but supported health officials in taking border restrictions seriously.

"They are very, very aware of what the effects of placing restrictions have within those border communities and my understanding is that there are exemptions, very clear medical exemptions for individuals," he said.

"That is at the forefront of chief health officers' minds."

I know I drop the c bomb freely but very rarely I call females c***s, but that QLD premier is a C***!

Not only because she is a heartless fuck playing politics but also for claiming bullying. How the fuck was that bullying you dumb ****.

I would of broke every law needed to be there for my father.

I cut my honeymoon in Cancun by 3 weeks to say my goodbye to my father and i missed him by 1 hour.

These heartless, power hungry pieces of shit you call politicians can all get fucked and I hope what goes around comes around to those motherfuckers.
