Ok so for those who aren't aware, this is the actual name for Return & Earn - you know, $0.10 for plastic and glass bottles and cans.

Well, this has become an actual real big business in recent years.

I remember that I used to hear people rummaging through my recycling bin at 2:00am looking for bottles and cans, and then as I left for work, saw the destructive mess they left behind.

As time went on, I saw people doing this in public areas as well such as public bins, shopping centres, the very popular food court, and even train stations. Yes, I saw a guy wearing a hi-vis vest at Parramatta station going through the recycling bins there. I actually thought the guy was an official worker for the train station at first until I realised what he was actually looking for.

Now... it's dog-eat-dog in the hunt for these things.

The guy that used to go around at 2:00am under the cover of darkness, now, shamelessly, will go out at 4:00pm THE DAY BEFORE, in broad daylight, when the bins have just gone out, and start rummaging through them.

That's not the kicker though.

The kicker is that these people will then go and drive around street by street looking through everyone's recycling bin, and they would do this EVERYDAY of the week, driving through suburbs and collecting hundreds of these things.

Then you see them at the recycling centres with vans full of them.

What was once just a casual way of making some loose change has now become a full-time job.

Unfortunately nothing is free, prices at the checkout went up to accomodate.
My dad loves it tho every carton of beer he gets 3$ back. He drink TUN Blue 1% carton costs 30$ ish dollars. So as he says 1 free carton for every 10 he drinks.

Yeah but these people do not pay a cent for the cans and bottles they collect from peoples recycle bins.

If we are too lazy to do it. Let them have the cans. Or if you want to make them work just throw the cans around your yard XD

Firstly excellent thread.

Petrols not free either. Driving around from street to street and then the drive out to cash them in and the drive home after cashing them. Probably break even......

There is one of those garbo / can collection places near my gym.. on different days I’ve seen the same bloke on a push bike.. he had a pen and paper with him ticking off something.. I think he is systematic about the areas that he raids for cans and brings them back to his base camp.

Problem is if you drink cans or bottles and you just lob them in your bin, these butchers will sniff them out and then all the bums will be at your bins ravaging through them..

This is like a community within themselves. They probably fight to the death bare knuckle and bare back at the return and earn can places… winner take all.

I’ve seen another old bum that walks around my area, he walks day and night to find a can or a bottle.. I’m thinking what did you do with your life to have to have the indignity of walking the streets and shopping centres to grab a can here and there.

Then there are these weirdos who have built contraptions to carry cans.. it’s like they show off to the other bums…

I might go to one of these can machines and just start throwing a few uppercuts, we gotta purge society of the bums every know and again.

You dont see too many of these bums with the cans turn up in a Porsche to drop off their cans.

I’ll do a survey next time.. two questions only required to profile them .. do you rent or own… did you vote yes

@Wahesh

I must have the mother of odd lock.. I’m at Cole’s and the old bum mentioned above is cashing in a bunch of earn and return tickets.. he comes up to me talking shit about a buck for a f&$k days are truely long gone..

He stunk bad so I stepped back then he takes a step forward..

I was gonna unload an uppercut on him there and then. Old bum stunk

I'm actually considering getting a chain and padlock setup for ours. I'll unlock it when the bins go out for recycling night the night before at like 10pm or something.

Not that we really have that much in bottles anyway.

But I just don't like the idea of people I do not know, nor authorise, to be lurking around my property. It irks me, and honestly if I catch someone on the property without my permission lurking around, I'll deadset blast them.

There's probably a fine line between coming into someone's yard for cans and scoping out whether there's anything easy to steal. And if they know that they aren't disturbing the homeowners while checking for cand, they can assume that if they wanted to swipe tools etc, they'll be equally free to sneak around while doing that.

There's nothing wrong with people who do this for a hobby, so cans and bottles that they buy and use over several months get used, rinsed out with water (trust me, it stops them from stinking and gathering bugs), and then put them in a shed or garage in or something like that, then take them to the return and earn machine (or factory), but those who do this day-in day-out for a living are abusing what the scheme was actually brought in for.

Sure it keeps the streets cleaner, but it's not going to solve the plastic "problem" that environmentalists believe exists.

What I can't ascertain is how can people these days not have a fence/gate to stop people from not only peeping into, but physically coming into their backyard? It's for your own security and privacy. Heaven forbid a rabid dog can run into your house at any time and go on a rampage.

That will never happen, we don't have rabies in Australia.
Well if that dog gets bitten and contracts ABLV, then that can be passed onto humans.

Rabies of not, if a dog wants to attack someone, they'll do it. FENCE UP KAZ!!!
