Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has handed the Bulldogs a cruel blow this week, stating exciting young gun Matt Burton won’t be granted an early release from the Panthers for the 2021 season, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

The 20-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Bulldogs last month in a deal that will allow him the option for a third-term.

While Barrett has made strong moves in the recruiting sector this year, the former Panthers assistant has been hoping to add Burton to his squad a year prior to the agreed deal.

Cleary has already managed to retain young prop Spencer Leniu for the next two years after the Bulldogs and Dragons had reportedly expressed their interests, and has stated Burton will be playing for ‘The Riff’ next year.

‘‘We always wanted Matt to stay with us and we presented an offer, which was a good offer,’’ Cleary told The Herald.

‘‘There was always the possibility Burto might decide to leave, and that was always going to be purely for opportunity and better money.

‘‘But we were clear from the start he wouldn’t be granted a release for 2021 if that did happen. That hasn’t changed, we’ve been very open about it, and there are two reasons for it.

‘‘Firstly, Matt is a very valuable member of our squad and will make a considerable contribution to our performance next year.

‘‘And we also think it’s best for him personally to stay in our system for another year so he can further develop – it’s our opinion that it’s best for him in the long run he stays with us another 12 months. We know people are agitating for it [an early release] to happen, but everyone has been well aware of our position for a long time.’’

Cleary the mug has massive double standards and loves blocking good kids pathways to NRL if they sign with another club! You can see the writing on the wall with this, he is filthy with Burton for leaving Penrith so he’s going to make him play reserve grade for a season and block his earning capacity just because Cleary is upset the wanker. What an utter waste of talent sitting on the sideline behind Luai and May.

Can't see Cleary wanting to "develop" a player going to a rival club. This is more a back up option, in case something happens to his main players during the season.

I guess we'd feel the same if one of our better players wanted to leave a year early.

Three things this could mean.

1. The dogs haven't offered to take an overpaid did off the Panthers to ease cap space.

2. Penrith want to ensure they've got quality depth in the halves on the cheap.

3. Cleary is being a bitch because he thought Barrett wouldn't poach players due to the hands off edict.

Clearly Cleary has a small penis and has insecurities about his small penis, therefore due to having a small penis clearly doesn't have any confidence to do his job and has made bitch moves by blocking burton from starting his career. foreshame clearly you small penis prick.

All Cleary had to say was “Burton is a quality player, wished he stayed with Penrith and he will play a role in our chase for a premiership in 2021”
No need for all that garbage about personnel development staying at Penrith. In a way he’s having a cheap shot at the dogs. Smug dog.

Cleary is full of shit. The lies and crap he told the Tigers player and fans when he was trying to sneak out the back door to return to Penrith. Can't stand the lying snake. Panthers rightfully so have every reason to hang on to Burton, I am ok with that as he is contracted. Just hate how Cleary rates himself as a coach. His record is pretty average except for one good season.

Dont understand the hate. Its pretty standard coach talk tbh. He's just saying they're not going to roll over. I'd expect our coach and ceo to say the same.

Maybe so except for the "to help his development" talk that's a blatant fucking lie...he isn't a good guy and is a deserter himself so I don't really understand how you couldn't dislike the prick :p
