Can someone please explain to me why the 90s JDM cars have seemingly, out of nowhere, exploded in value with no regard whatsoever for the kms traveled or transmission (manuals are cheaper than auto)?

To some extent there might be a few people that wanted these type of cars when they were younger who can now afford to pay those ridiculous prices. But at the end of the day rarity will dictate what the average price will be for them. And as Assassin said, people can be delusional.

Originally everyone thought that they were sick drifters, but now everyone realised that they are fully sick drifters. So they're worth more.

They used to be illegal in the USA, now they've past some 20year old threshold law and they are legal in the US

That's why their prices have skyrocketed, one of them (R34 Skyline) I believe sold for $400k

Conclusion – Why Is The Nissan Skyline Illegal In The United States?
Long story short, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is illegal in the United States because it doesn’t meet the requirements of the 1988 Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act. The Skyline was not built with the right safety features to comply with the relevant road safety legislation.

However, once a vehicle reaches 25 years of age, it is exempt from these regulations and can therefore be imported and driven on the road in the United States.

This means that the R32 GTR (the original ‘Godzilla’) for example can be imported into the USA, with California being perhaps the most notable exception in terms of individual states where you might have trouble importing due to stricter emissions control laws.

The earliest models of the R33 GTR are also starting to become legal for import and compliance as well, and by 2024 you should be able to start importing the R34 GTR (provided there are no additional changes to legislation by then, or further tightening of emissions and environmental rules which is always a risk in the current climate).

As soon as Nissan said no more GTR, all of them went from $80K for a 2011/12 to like $240K and some of the 2017 are going for $400K+....dreaming.

2 reasons.

1. Delusional ***** will put ridiculously high prices on cars but no-one will pay. They eventually start dropping their price.
2. Some people will put overs on a car (not ridiculous delusional **** prices) yet some will pay.

Its not just cars, its anything anyone wants to call classic, antique or vintage.

Game and watches, records, guitars even lego.

Classic jap cars crazy high prices now.

Usually from highest to lowest rotors, dattos then toyota's.

I think the hardest find most expensive for what they are datsun 240Z. See some 260's come up from time to time but rarely 240's. Theres a really nice 240Z for sale now on carsales for $175K.

In general, 2nd hand cars are so expensive that you're better off getting a new one.

Nostalgia is a big reason people buy old cars, they either owned them at one stage or always wanted too and they can make it happen once they have spare cash to spend on them.

Try buying a lx A9X torana (my favourite car when I was younger).

Even my 2005 xr6 has gone up in value the last few years. It is mint though.

There is a trend i agree and while a high list price doesn't equal a high sale price i looked up my ute a VE 2012 SS Thunder and there is virtually nothing under 34K and all significantly higher k's than mine with similar or less add-ons.
They were the last Thunders ever made as they went back to the Storm variant for the VF so idk if that has something to do with it, but if someone offered me low to mid 30's i would be listening as i only paid a tick under 39K new.

Covid tax and desperation, people are now more reliant on personal vehicles rather than taking public transport.

Also generational vehicles have an affinity with kids growing up with those cars
