South Sydney got Sam Burgess’ entire $1 million salary wiped off the salary cap, yet Canterbury can expect less than half of that for losing Kieran Foran to injury while on rep duty.
It is a situation that will have Bulldogs fans barking mad come next week.

Because two and a half months after Kieran Foran went down with a serious shoulder injury while playing Test football for New Zealand, Canterbury is finally expected to get a verdict from the NRL next week on how much money they will have taken off their salary cap for this season.

And it is likely to leave the club and their supporters feeling severely short-changed, especially when they look at how recent events have unfolded for South Sydney.

As it stands NRL policy states a maximum of $350,000 is only allowed in salary cap relief for players injured while on rep duty.
In Foran’s case that represents about one third of his reported $1.2 million annual salary, even though Foran could be sidelined for up to nine months in total.

But on the other hand the Rabbitohs are spending up big with the money they saved from having Sam Burgess’ $1 million-plus salary wiped off the salary cap following his recent medically forced retirement, and before that there was the Greg Inglis decision.

Canterbury chief executive Andrew Hill did not want to enter into the debate when contacted, but the fact of the matter is this issue needs to be discussed — and it is up to the NRL to take charge so fans don’t feel cheated.
In the past other clubs have suffered similarly with Canberra in particular receiving no salary cap relief for losing Josh Hodgson and Jordan Rapana to rep injuries in recent years, although that led to a policy change.

But even after changing the guidelines it seems ludicrous that the NRL put a $350,000 limit on this when the elite players, usually on huge salaries, are the ones involved in rep football.

Perhaps a fairer system would be if a percentage of a player’s wage was taken off the cap for every game missed, although that still doesn’t take into account time lost during pre-season which is critically important.
Meanwhile Foran is doing all he can to get back on the field ahead of schedule and is hoping he could be playing at some stage in May.

But the medical advice that has been given to the club suggests it is more likely to be between round 15 and round 20 before Foran is cleared to return.

Canterbury already has the NRL’s youngest and most inexperienced roster but this was a situation completely out of the club’s control.

In Foran’s absence they will have to rely on youngsters Lachy Lewis, Jack Cogger and Brandon Wakeham to carry the load and it just puts unfair pressure on everyone, from Hill and coach Dean Pay down.

When the verdict is handed down at least the Bulldogs should have an extra $350,000 to spend on a new player.

But it’s still small change compared to what the Rabbitohs received for losing Burgess and Inglis

Why do people still compare Foran and Burgess when it comes to this? They are two completely different things!

They are different, but not completely. Both involve; an NRL decision effecting an individual club, rules concerning the salary cap, and player injury. More to the point the two decisions the NRL made in relation to Souffs are broadly seen as accommodating to Souffs salary cap, whereas the likely decision they are going to make re Foran and the Dogs is broadly seen as harsh.

Fair deal in my opinion.
Not really. The rep game was just after the season ended, and For an will likely miss the whole season. So given his reported $1.2 mil salary, $350k is not exactly fair.
In any case, we have named our top 30 players, so how are we meant to find a replacement? And who is there on offer? Do we even need another half?

It is different you are right ... but the issue is more why cap it at $350k? So if the player is only on $350k then they get the full salary exempt? It should be 50% of their salary so we would get over $500k for Foran plus the 300-400 reportedly remaining we would be active for a marque player for 2020...

$350k is still not bad though we can and should buy somebody..for 2020.

$350k max for a player injured during rep games is a joke. Not many quality players on $350k let alone rep players. How can a club replace a rep player with a similar player (assuming there is availability in the market to buy one) for $350k?!

This is the worse aspect of it. Who TF came up with a figure of $350K as a replacement for a Rep player.

NRL should allow 70% of the pay of a rep player for example if a player is on 1 mill
They would get 700k cap relief.
The problem is you can’t replace a rep player for a second grade player, 350k is a joke.

That was always going to be the decision so why take so long to make it?

Anyway, not as much $$s as we'd like but still $350k - and surely we've got another fer hundred thousand (at least) still available given our average squad. Wonder what we'll do with the money? Given there's no decent dummy half's or halves available, it could make a deal with Addo Carr possible. Why not get someone who's one of the top few players in his position?

Then again you don’t buy a commodore with a blown head, leaky radiator, no brakes & a hole in the sump and whack it straight in Bathurst

the dogs knew what they were getting when they signed him and why they allowed him to play for NZ who knows especially after his track record the last few years

before the game I posted he’ll be injured early and be out for most of the year and duck me did I get howled down and told I was negative blah blah blah

this to me is a failure of the new board they should have pulled him aside and said wake the fuck up son instead they did the opposite

It's fine to disagree with the rule and suggest it should be changed but Foran didn't medically retire therefore we're not entitled for more than 350k. This situation isn't comparable to Burgess.

but why only 350k max? We lost a million dollar player so we should be able to sign up a like for like player to the same value.

The problem is not with the NRL but with Foran. The club needs to tell him he won’t be allowed to play again - on medical grounds. His body is so shot is the duty of the club’s duty of care to him to not pick him to play NRL again.

It's hardly personal. This is the amount they decided, rightly or wrongly.
