Canterbury have been formally sounded out about their interest in England rugby union coach Eddie Jones as part of a coaching structure that could involve former Bulldogs halfback Brett Kimmorley.

The Australian understands the club was told that the former Wallabies coach would potentially be interested in returning to Australia if an opportunity arose for him in the NRL. Melbourne assistant Jason Ryles, who is due to join Jones’s England coaching staff at the end of the year, could also form part of the new set-up.

The Bulldogs are mulling over a decision on the future of coach Dean Pay, who is off contract at the end of the season and yet to convince club officials that he is worthy of an extension.

The likelihood is that Pay will be told his services are no longer required beyond this year, leaving the club to search for a new head coach.

Former Manly coach Trent Barrett, now an assistant at Penrith, has been prominently linked with the role, although Bulldogs officials insist they are yet to hold talks with any prospective coaches.

That hasn’t stopped the club being inundated with interest from elsewhere. The most left-field has come from someone purporting to represent Jones, one of the most successful coaches in rugby union but a long-time rugby league fan.

Jones has remained tight-lipped after being linked with a variety of rugby league roles in recent months. However, the silence has fuelled speculation over his future amid suggestions there is genuine interest in returning to Australia to becoming involved in the NRL.

The Bulldogs need to get their next coaching decision right. They have struggled in recent seasons but have a $3 million war chest at the ready and an appetite to spend it on players who will make them a premiership force.

After only one game, Englishman Luke Thompson looks like a smart buy. He shirked little as he made his debut against Brisbane, making it his mission to take on Tevita Pangai Junior.

Great rugby coach who transformed the English team but this next 2 years is so important to us as a club with this long standing notion of having a "war chest" if we get it wrong and the Eddie Jones experiment fails we will never get off the bottom of the table again.

I would rather us just sign Ryles and Kimmorley to support Pay. What are the current assistants doing?

The Telegraph and Herald etc whore themselves out to the managers of these coaches. The manager pays a fee and their client can have three or four articles printed linking him to the Dogs.

We've honestly been linked to 10 plus coaches in the last few weeks and there's probably no truth to most of them.

Plenty... Japan where never a force and he coached them to make the semi’s ... England become a powerhouse under his leadership too.. i’d only be ok with him if he had a smart league mind around him...

Coached Australia and England to finals of the World Cup although runner up both times. Can coach a footy side and is an excellent man manager with plenty of discipline. Would need a couple of Ennis/Kimmorley types around him if we took a chance. Him or Shaun Wane would be good picks if we didn't go with a current or past NRL coach or assistant.

Too much of a risk to hire a Union coach to be honest, doesn't matter how strong his credentials are. I do really like the fact that Kimmorley and Ryles are being spoken about as assistants though.

The drums are beating loudly, club needs to come out and make a decision on this asap otherwise it'll further destabalize an already disastrous season and massively impact recruitment for next season. The longer the board stays silent the more we look like a basket case.

I heard they have approached Joe Rogan to coach us on a 5 year contract.

I have no problem with Jones as he is an excellent man manager and has got good results from his Rugby Union players. But is it a gamble given he has not coached Rugby League. over to you Lynne.
