Canterbury Bulldogs: 2019 Round 1 predicted team

Second-year coach Dean Pay will have a significantly overhauled roster at his disposal for round one 2019 as the club looks to build on a bright and encouraging finish to an otherwise frustrating 2018.

The Bulldogs recruited heavily over the 2018-19 off-season with fullback Nick Meaney, props Dylan Napa and Sauaso Sue and back-rower Corey Harawira-Naera the most likely to be in the 17 come round one.

A fit-again Kieran Foran will return to the halves alongside 2018 discovery Lachlan Lewis while Will Hopoate switches from fullback to centre to replace Josh Morris. A fit-again Marcelo Montoya will have competition from Christian Crichton for Brett Morris's vacated wing spot.

Resident NRL.com expert Jamie Soward says:

"It all depends on whether the young guys can keep that level of intensity and excitement they had at the back end of 2018. They've got plenty of talent in the back row. Can Rhyse Martin keep it up, we'll have to wait and see. I would have Marshall-King on the bench ahead of Fa'amanu Brown, he gives some excitement out of dummy half and a point of difference in their attack.

"It's a changing of the guard for the Dogs, they could have another couple of tough years but they've stripped it right back. They'll surprise a few teams but they will be down the lower end of the ladder."

NRL.com's predicted Round 1 team:

  1. Nick Meaney
  2. Marcelo Montoya
  3. Will Hopoate
  4. Kerrod Holland
  5. Reimis Smith
  6. Lachlan Lewis
  7. Kieran Foran
  8. Dylan Napa
  9. Michael Lichaa
  10. Aiden Tolman
  11. Josh Jackson
  12. Rhyse Martin
  13. Adam Elliott
  14. Fa'amanu Brown
  15. Sauaso Sue
  16. Corey Harawira-Naera
  17. Raymond Faitala-Mariner
Other squad members: Danny Fualalo, Christian Crichton, Jack Cogger, Jeremy Marshall-King, Ofahiki Ogden, Jayden Okunbor, John Olive, Zac Saddler, Chris Smith, Renouf To'omaga, Francis Tualau, Brandon Wakeham

Id change Montoya with Crichton and Brown with Fualaou. I heard that Fualaou has been going very well at training, might be his breakout season.

Sauaso Sue
Must admit I haven't seen much of Sue. Is he likely to be in front of Ogden, Tualau or Fualalo? I thought Ogden played well in those opportunities he got late last season, I think he deserves a bench spot.

Sue's not too bad and I'm really surprised his only 26...

We have a pretty good bench next season with limited spots and plenty of potential,

I dont think he will leave out rfm and chn, and only play with one winger if he plans on keeping his job.

If Hopa is not fullback, he probably should not be in the team. He is definitely not a centre.

Smith should be outside Holland. Don't change that, it worked a treat. A rough combination on the other side might be Montoya and Crichton. Montoya is a very elusive runner and might benefit from having the ball earlier and with more room.

Sue on his day is a weapon, he will prove to be a good purchase if we get consistency out of him.

Fualalo is looking like the motherfucking Hulk right now, surely 2019 will be his year.

Brown on the bench? yea na

The coach is only going to play 4 players in 1-5 - Meaney, Crichton, Holland and Hopoate.

I'll be betting on the opposition 13+ every game.

My inebriated tXmas day thoughts on team selection 2019:

1. Big bet on a rookie - Meaney needs to work, all other options are sh!t.
Would prefer see Holland back there over Hoppa.

2&5. Looking OK - Remuis is a lock, Okinbur, Crichton, Olive, Montoya to fight it out for the other.

3&4. Hoppa and Holland are a pass mark, would be nice if Harper can steel the show, think he is capable. Out side that we're f@#ked..

6. Foran - Get on board haters, we need him firing if we are any hope of being competitive for the 8.

7. If we are playing a half a side, Lewis get first shot. If we are playing a 7 on the ball, Cogger get first crack. Finally we have NRL standard in this position.

11 & 12. How the article doesn't have RFM starting is beyond me... We have crazy depth on the edge, so much so, think its time for Jacko to move to the middle.

9. JMK and Brown back up. Lichaa f#$k off to England already!

8, 10&13 - The club have stated they are looking to bring 1 more in in this position. If that signing is Kasiano, like quality and Jacko moves to the middle, I genuinly think we have a middle that can compete with the best. If not, we are one or two injuries away from being up shit creek
