I was just looking at the 2019 roster. Upgrading the team goes in stages. We had Nu Brown and Michael Lichaa holding the fort at 9 back then. We didn't really give Brown much if a shot, but neither did the clubs that recruited him after he left the dogs. Plenty of people would've gotten excited to replace them with a packet of peanuts. We had Marshal King playing in the halves back then and he was eventually transitioned to 9 as a decent upgrade to Lichaa.
I think Turpin had been found lacking by the time we got him which was indicative of where we were at the time. I really think that getting Mahoney jumped us forward a lot. A hooker that can get every play going with a bit of momentum will make the rest of the team perform a bit better.
So while I don't rate Turpin on what I've seen of him, it's not ti say that he wasn't better than Lichaa or Brown when he joined us.
