Sorry didn’t we just build a new “centre of excellence” at the beginning of the Greenberg era?

Mustn’t take long for something to become non-excellent these days

Why are NRL clubs receiving government hand-outs?
Sorry, what?

The headline in the Tele said it all: $113m win for NRL clubs.

“Great!” I thought. New broadcasting deal? New sponsorship? Private equity deal? Ummm, no.

The “win” has come from you and me, the NSW taxpayer. The story goes on to detail how the NSW government will contribute funds for world-class rugby league training facilities to develop the stars of tomorrow at Belmore Sports Ground, the University of Wollongong and Kellyville Park, as part of an initiative to be unveiled in Tuesday’s state budget.

“The state government will spend $113m to support the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, St George Illawarra Dragons and Parramatta Eels in delivering three new centres of excellence to find and develop future male and female NRL and NRLW players . . .”

You get the drift. Different year. Same old shit.

One more time for the dummies. In a state where so many worthy causes are crying out for resources – think schools, hospitals, LISMORE – why on earth is the Perrottet government handing out huge chunks of taxpayer cash to these clubs?

Friends, this is not just madness, it is sustained madness. It comes from the same dynamic which gave us #StadiumSplurge. It is a decision with bugger-all consideration for what the people actually need. Make it stop!
You talk shit and stink like one Mr FtizSimons...
You want us to believe that you care about hospitals and other more essential community services by saying those funds should be spent there...sure !
The question is, would it have been any different if the funds are spent on AFL ?
Incidentally do you know that sports people and fans pay taxes like every other Australian does ?
Do you pay yours Mr FitzSimons or you would rather pay a very expensive accountant to avoid paying ?

Well it would be getting on now, so a new centre sounds good. I don't know what advancements in training there are, for instance a lot of the equipment is the same as it has been for a hundred years (barbells and dumbells and weight plates) but obviously there would be some new training machines that become available or new versions of machines we may already have.

I wonder if a lot of these new "centres of excellence" are just new equipment. You'd want to supply professional athletes with new gear regularly. I guess that's all it is really. Maybe a hyperbaric chamber, one of those cryo things or some other whiz bang machine.
I couldn't gather much information regarding this, but it seems to be a temporary "centre" licence thing lasting 7 years or so, our previous centre at belmore or homebush must have expired and was granted a renewal.
Besides upgrades to gym stuff, I think it's also more of a research, monitoring , education and qualifications granting, training centre, could employ/facilitate things like diet, fitness, blood, tracking/monitoring so I think the employment of a handful of staff is where they mean "helping the community" because a person assumes they're employing people close or within the area but who knows. Not sure the community can "use" it like a medical centre.

I think that is where creativity and collaboration comes into it (club local state federal government) - i was there a few months back - it is / was very run down - all the groups mentioned could have their facilities incorporated within a new updated facility - the population just within walking distance will be massive - also close to railway
I'm out of the area but think this should be strongly supported for the Clubs future, it's for the decades and generations to come not just for myself to get to games.
Imagine a commbank / bankwest style stadium in one of our traditional areas Bulldogs can finally secure and grow adding to our junior base, W Tigers and Parra have been taking our juniors from these areas too

Is the site in Liverpool big enough to get a stadium in though
If you remember, it's was big enough for a Suncorp clone, casino and hotel, largest water park in southern hemisphere and training facility.

That crooked labor **** fucked it up for us.

Alright... Hate me if you must.

The NSW gov't has royally screwed the pooch when it comes to $$$. They said there was enough for hospitals & stadiums, but when there is an expansion to a hospital, the staff have to threaten to go on strike so they can get cleaners!

Whilst the Doggies are most dear to me, I think there are many more important things they can spend this amount of money on.

I totally agree, hospitals are 1st priority and need more funding and management.
Having said that, the government allocates amounts towards different divisions, that's their budgeting for that health sector that needs to be better managed, the division to where sport and stadia is, should be treated separately and receive funding accordingly. Main thing is that stadium or rebuilds don't become white elephants and help promote economy and community activity, etc, then overall sounds good to me.

We could have already had a dedicated stadium and club at Liverpool if the NSW Labor Government had not refused to grant the poker machine licence.
Really? I was wondering why we didn’t build a league club In Liverpool

Yes it’s massive old Liverpool played out there ground there. And that only takes approximately 1/6 of the land. It’s about same or double of belmore including supportofeilfs, car park ,club and parks

He doesn’t think professional sport needs funding for stadiums and centres of excellent as his days of playing elite sport have finished.

It was “massive” before the Whitlam Leisure Centre and the preschool and the Liverpool SES and the Liverpool Pathology Centre and before the Liverpool Netball Assoc built 32 Netball Courts and the NSW Ambulance Station was moved there.

My memory is hazy - I've had a few sleeps since then - but I vaguely recall some connection between the original Liverpool plan falling over and the salary cap scandal. I also recall (or mavbe I dreamed it) that one of the main players was Paul Keating's former partner in the notorious piggery. Can anyone remember?

Be good if they build it at southern end and it incorporates a new grand stand like manlys new one built. Use some money to upgrade lighting and play our games there
I have a feeling it could be built over near Peter Moore fields.

Liverpool should just be used as a site for a new leagues club and maybe a smaller oval for NRLW/ Juniors. Belmore is the spiritual home of the club and should be where we stay, I hope we aren’t planning to leave

They will never move the Leagues club, to many Asians and Middle Easterners feeding the machines.

Unless they open a casino or high rollers club at Liverpool, or turn Belmore into high roller club and normal club at Liverpool.
