GREATER Northern Tigers are on the rugby league radar of the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs.

While the Newcastle Knights once used the region as a "breeding ground" and the Wests Tigers more recently with their efforts to play one of their NRL games in Tamworth each season the Bulldogs are also keen to form a relationship.

Greater Northern Region area manager, Scott Bone, said the Bulldogs will announce a new partnership with the Greater Northern and the three Groups - 4, 19 and 21 - that make up the GNR on Thursday.

"It's in line with all the other country regions," Scott Bone said.

"We are the last to be officially linked to a NRL club.

"Northern Rivers have the Titans, North Coast are also with the Bulldogs, the Central Coast is with the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle, Maitland, obviously, with the Knights.

"The wests Tigers have that group 6 camden area, the Dragons are linked to the Illawarra South Coast, Western is with the Penrith Panthers and the Monaroa Riverina with the Canberra Raiders.

"The Bulldogs will help us with our resources and upskilling of of coaches in the area. It's also about lending support to the junior leagues and helping improve the coaches and coaching standards at that junior level."

He said Newcastle Knights once regarded the region as "theirs" and attracted many outstanding young players such as Robbie McCormack (Inverell), Brad Tighe (Tamworth), current Cronulla coach John Morris (Scone) and Werris Creek's Matt Parsons (via St George) to their ranks.

Canterbury also had some great links with the region too in the late '80s," Scott Bone said.

"The McGradys and Ryan boys from Moree all played down there, Gunnedah's David (Dooga) McCantoo, Muswellbrook's Jamie Feeney played there and more recently Kerrod Holland, who started out at Singleton but then went to Cessnock and Newcastle Knights is now in their first grade side. Players like Jimmy Leis (Tamworth), who went to Wests first but finished up at the Bulldogs, have great links with the club."

Even the late great Mick Adams, a former England captain finished his career with Canterbury, before making Tamworth his home kept the Bulldog link to the region real.

"It would be great to be able to work with the Bulldogs to provide a pathway for all our kids," Scott Bone said.

"If we could work in together everyone in the region, from Tenterfield out to Moree and down into the Hunter, would benefit."

Representatives from Country Rugby League and the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs will announce the partnership between the Bulldogs and the Greater Northern Region at Jack Woolaston Oval from 9am Thursday.

CRL chief executive Terry Quinn, CRL High Performance Manager Matt Parish and Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs Representatives Gareth Holmes (Football Operations Manager) and Mark Hughes (Recruitment Coordinator) will join Greater Northern Region officials for the announcement.

Even if we get 1 or 2 nyc players from this will be a great investment.

Good to link up with a country region and send some money and funds to help develop talent. Small price to pay for huge upside.

Isn’t this our 2nd or 3rd partnership? Didn’t we have something organised last season too and also with the school up on the gold coast? Hopefully we start seeing some young promising players starting to come through our ranks in the coming years.

North coast partnership started this year and Keebra park affiliation started last year

This move puts us back on the right track to a good junior development path. It's admirable that we're investing in grass roots football in so many areas. The NRL dropped the ball on this. Greenberg started the rot with our club and hasn't seen a need to keep country rugby league strong either. Hopefully we pick up a few players that go on to big things.

Another strong decision from the board, well done.
Tired of missing so much young talent from the country going to other clubs.

This is sensational news it means we have pretty much all of northern NSW locked into our system now. Only Newcastle and the Northern Rivers are covered by other teams.

This will pay off sooner or later.

Fantastic so much upside for this and we will have a big net to cast. Hopefully our local juniors will also be looked after as well.

Be great if we could move our NSW Cup team out to this region. Based in Tamworth. But have a few home grounds out that way to keep the interest up and attract more fans in these regions (Giving back), be setup more like the QLD Cup.

Great news, and makes sense as local area juniors for Bulldogs are few and far between.

My only concern (about partnerships like this) is other recruitment consultants from other clubs swooping in and grabbing the best up coming talent, even though we established that partnership, and we get the left overs.

Any partnerships in these regions should be exclusive, whereby our club has first and final call on any talent out of the region, and other talent scouts after we've made calls on those players.

We also need to ensure we aren't leaving ourselves short with staff allocated to these areas yet needed for NRL/CC/NYC/SG/HM grade duties/work.

This is what happens with our affiliation with Keebra, all the top talents go to the Broncos and we get the left overs.

With this partnership we have joined a group of other NRL clubs in forming an association which is designed to at least funnel promising juniors from the catchment areas into our club. Roosters have had an alliance with the Central Coast for some time and Penrith, Titans and St George are others who have an arrangement.

From what I have heard though it is a little fraught with problems because if a player from that area comes to an NRL club and does not progress there can be issues in getting clearances to go " back home"

They had this discussion on Talkin Sport a little while ago with some rather aggrieved parents telling stories about their child being denied a clearance...It had something to do with the Roosters I think and a player from the mid to far north coast region......

Can anyone else can shed any more light on this?

Just getting our junior infrastructure set up like the old bulldogs to create a constant production line of up and coming juniors coming through, great long term thinking from the club

Good because the Greenacre Garbos have no talent.
