Just 125 days after steering Manly to a second premiership, Des Hasler kick-started his new campaign at Canterbury on Saturday night with a 28-18 win over St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium. In stark contrast to his former club's 32-point loss to Cronulla on Friday night, Hasler's squad showed glimpses of their master orchestrator's trademark style, running away with the game through gritty defence while capitalising on costly Dragons errors.

The match also provided the small army of fans their first snapshot of the Red V under incumbent coach Steve Price. But with little in the way of NRL talent - only 146 first-grade caps between the 53 players involved - judgement of either team's title hopes would be better reserved until a later date.Bulldogs winger Ratu Tagive featured strongly, crossing twice in the first half to give the Bulldogs a handy 14-6 lead.Of the Dragons' four NRL campaigners, David Gower put his hand up for more first-grade appearances this season with some bustling runs.

Played at a ground with a heavily scaffold-braced western grandstand, the game also provided Bulldogs NSW Cup coach Barry Ward with some promising signs that his team can extend their run of three consecutive premierships. The Bulldogs lost their way in the final stanza, but critical Dragons errors meant the visitors would not be outscored.Dean McGlinchey delivered the nail in the coffin with his 74th-minute try for the Bulldogs, allowing Hasler some confidence heading into next Sunday's trial against the Roosters.

The kids would have gotten a lot out of being in a side coached/prepared by Hasler. Good to see depth isnt a problem and yeh we have won the the last 3 NSW Cups, thats pretty cool.

Theres an article on Bulldogs.com.au where Hasler said he was impressed with Taupau, Browne, Finucane, Foster and Jackson. Not much mention of who impressed him from the backline but Tagive apparently scored two tries on the wing so maybe he'll be a bolter for a wing spot if he can keep up the form.

Heres a link to the article

Was an enjoyable afternoon. Not a lot of familiar faces on the paddock but Marty looked like the new Robbo and gave the team plenty of bulldozing runs. Ratu Taguie impressed on the wing. Catches the ball and positions himself well with a ton of speed to go with his useful height. His actions led to points and he all but pulled off an impossible run down of a steeler try scorer. The only blemish was unnecessarily letting the ball bounce on the very last play of the day which could have led to a steelers try. Lesson Ratu, don't let up for the entire 80 minutes including the last few seconds even if the game is won.

Sorry for the lack of spacing, thats the forums fault since they updated it. Wont allow paragraphs when pasting or editing posts....ANNOYING.

Des would have seen first hand the power of the Dogs of War and subsequent years of menacing sides from a playing and coaching point of view. I wonder if he uses our past when getting the best out of our current players. Citing examples of how hard he got hit and what a hard game it has always been against us and getting that mentality back into our attitude.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

I think Dymock began utilising the clubs proud history/reputation last year to motivate the squad and I don't see why Hasler wouldn't allow that process to continue.

I also think 95% of that reputation came on the back of the intimidation factor of our forwards, and for the first time in a while I look at our pack and think wow we're really going to smash straight through some teams this year.
