Canterbury hooker Sione Katoa has launched an impassioned defence of anti-vaxxers and explained why his family chooses not to get the flu shot.

It’s the hottest topic in rugby league at the moment, after it was last week revealed a number of NRL players refused to get the needle which the governing body had tried to make compulsory.

It was a promise the ARLC allegedly made to state governments in an extensive document which detailed how the NRL season could resume safely in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Queensland government stepped in to force Gold Coast to stand down Bryce Cartwright and Brian Kelly, who refused to get the shot.

The NSW government won’t follow suit and NSW health officer Kerry Chant said it will be left up to the NRL how to deal with those state-based anti-vax players.

“It is really a matter for the NRL as a workplace employer to consider their occupational health and safety obligations,” Chant said.

“Clearly there will be ramifications for them.

“It is in their best interest to exclude any flu-like illness amongst players because according to their plan any player who has any respiratory illness is not allowed to play.”

So while Katoa may not necessarily be stood down, he is clearly furious at the treatment of his friends Cartwright and Kelly who are excluded from training with the Titans.

Katoa took to Instagram to post a passionate rant about his own stance.

“I’ve had a few people contact me and ask why I declined the flu shot and wanted to share my reasons behind it, particularly now with one of our closest mates @brycecartwright6 and teammate Brian being stood down,” Katoa wrote.

“Lately I’ve seen journalists, reporters and mainstream media creating a divide between the community, the fans and the NRL by constantly shaming and bullying NRL players and their families who stand for freedom of choice.

“We acknowledge that the flu shot has the ability to result in serious adverse reactions and has also claimed lives. In 2018, the step father of a friend sadly passed away within 48 hours of his flu shot. He was an adult man, with no underlying health conditions.

“What if this were to happen to our family, or yours? Why are people so quick to advocate for “herd immunity” and not acknowledge vaccine injury/death? There are plenty of families within the NRL alone that suffer from vaccine injury.

“We used to be very pro-vaxx and judged those who chose not to vaccinate. Those judgments quickly passed as soon as vaccines caused health issues for our eldest son, Chase. “He was constantly sick after his shots, resulting in many trips to the hospital and doctors office. Our son was helpless and never getting any better, so we reached out for a second opinion which lead us down the path of holistic health. After seeking advice from medical professionals and seeing the positive impact that it had on our sons health, we made the informed decision to no longer vaccinate ourselves or our children.”

Standard anti-vaxxers response, commonly referred to in law as post hoc ergo propter hoc.
"the step father of a friend sadly passed away within 48 hours of his flu shot", after it therefore because of it.
“He was constantly sick after his shots", after it therefore because of it.

And the always dependable;
"we reached out for second opinion which lead us down the path of holistic health", how about a getting a second opinion from a specialist in immunology? Nope, straight to the "faith healer".

It’s such a silly argument. How many people die every year from motor vehicle accidents? You don’t see these guys advocating for not driving?

Plenty of jobs have requirements which have to be met before you can do the job. Aussie politicians for example have to be Aussie citizens, tradies have to do an apprenticeship and get a ticket, and now footy players have to get a flu jab in the new Covid world (if local health authorities say so). No-one's being coerced to do anything - you simply can't do a job without meeting the basic requirements. Hope Cartwright and Katoa find another job if they can't play RL, but for fuck's sake take some responsibility and stop whinging like spoilt 3 year olds.

People have a right to choose what they put in their body. Making vacs mandatory is against any personal freedom we have.
How would anyone feel if their employer mandated them get a vaccine just because it is recommended?
Btw what does a flu vaccine have with COVID? Clearly nothing as it does not provide immunity against it so why force people to get it? Do some research before you take up the mainstream agenda without critical thinking.

Complex.. Very debated subject, I know those who do an those who don’t, very touchy an personal choice, it will never have a right or wrong answer, up to the individual and right of freedom.

You're right, flu vaccine has nothing to do with covid. The annual flu vaccine is designed to combat the common and expected seasonal influenza illnesses.
It's even more important to get it this year because of covid. Having influenza will considerably reduce your bodies ability to combat other diseases / viruses as it weakens your immune system, hence you're more likely to get covid amongst other ailments. Secondly, in the current covid climate, anyone with flu like symptoms will be presumed to have covid until proven otherwise. This means being off work and in isolation, putting undue pressure on your employer and those that live with you.
As far as I'm concerned, anti vaxxers are amongst the most stupid and selfish group of people to draw breath.

The only right way to deal with this is let them play and if they get really ill from the flu etc. That's on the player! Problem solved!

The ones that got the jab have nothing to worry about.

You're right Bozzo, they do have the right to choose. And the NRL has the right to tell the player they're not playing if they don't get the jab.

I'm against the government forcing it but an employer is another thing. It's about providing protection for the other players. If they don't get vaccinated they could spread it to other players and the families of other players including at risk individuals. Considering that the flu kills around 3,000 Australians per year, you would think that people would be more considerate to the people around them.

Also, it's related because if we already have Covid-19 and have the flu on top of it, then that could be really bad.

I can only guess what you mean by "do some research"
