And don't forget that he had his long term hooker in jmk.

In 3 games kotoa has mad jmk look shit
In 3 play the balls yesterday Katoa cemented himself as the hooker for this club for the next 3 year if Liccha and JMK is anything to go by !

The coach has input into which players he wants to retain or sign and tells the club to act accordingly, so while yes the club maintain the salary cap they try to fit the coaches recruitment into the salary cap.

Dean pay persisted with jmk in the halves, where he was absolutely shit

So when the halves didn't work pay shifted jmk to hooker and earmarked jmk as our long term hooker.

It took kotoa THREE games to show, that while he was penriths 4th choice, he's a far better hooker than jmk.

So to suggest pay wasn't a big problem and that hes just as bad as the squad is bullshit because it was pay who was building the squad and persisting with shit like lewis and jmk
The coach may have input but doesn’t always get their way. Pay wanted Grub and our board said no (wise decision). Yes, you’re right, ‘fit the players into the cap’- and when you have no cap you have very few choices - it’s how we ended up with the likes of Britt when other players were cut like Liccha (different positions of course, I’m simply referring to overall roster management). Pay was never our long term answer and I’ve never suggested he was - but there were (and still are) other problems to solve...

I never said it’s 100% either way, but the squad simply isn’t up to scratch and the number of players who’ll be let go at the end of this season confirms that. With all the rage on here about sacking Pay earlier this year, it would simply be nice for some acknowledgement that it’s a combination of factors that need/ed change and it couldn’t be done quickly.
The squad didn't sign themselves up either.

Blame for our current predicament should fall on ALL those making the decisions.

No one issue is responsible for our lack of competitiveness....its management, admin, football department, players and seriously the majority of fans have said as much for a long time.

Pay was an easy target for his selections and bench etc. We wanted a scapegoat hoping the fault lines were primarily with him but now, with him gone, it probably more readily exposes the board and committees and the way the club is being run. What else can supporters think.

I hope we have the staff to fix this and Barrett can do his job.

So glad you brought up Reynolds

Look the squads a problem yes. But its not as big a problem as the wrong coach. If you sign a coach to build a squad (hypothetically if the board re-signed pay for the next 2 years) we were effectively given him go ahead to build HIS team.

He picked shit like jmk, britt, crichton, clay priest, lewis, and as you mentioned reynolds.

Can you imagine what garbage he would've collected if given an extension?

So yes he was a bigger problem than the squad because he was picking the wrong players and creating THAT squad

My view is he would’ve been gone for 2022 at the latest regardless. Perhaps not the most shrewd business but an attempted show of loyalty to work with more cap space given what he had to work with early on. They gave him every chance to succeed and when it was clear he wasn’t/couldn’t - he was told they’d look elsewhere and he walked. In the end it’s the right decision but other things need to be solved and hopefully Baz can do that with his plans and some decent bank. I believe at least 5 of the current 30 won’t be here next year - maybe 1 or 2 more depending on who we can sign which no doubt is being worked on right now.

You make some good points . I would re-sign Foran though given there are not many options out there . We need to recruit another half and getting 2 decent halves would be tough .

The rest can go and Jackson needs to be pushed to England sooner rather than later
It's so hard to get that genuine 7 that can steer you out of trouble. For example look at Wighton and Williams, for as good as they are they couldn't do shit to get Canberra back into the game into the game. For us someone like Townsend would be good for a year or 2 if he could get fit again.
Looks like Dean Pay was not the big problem after all.
Don't get it twisted he was a major fucking problem. First step in recovery fucking him off, next step is punting Lewis for good.

Bloody hell. Its a long story to state the obvious. We knew all year we are not a good side. Being thrashed by a top 4 side isn't surprising and hardly needs a long explanation.
We were also thrashed by the team thats coming second last.....
