Canterbury have moved a step closer to resolving the contract drama with star forward David Klemmer after a positive meeting with the prop’s manager on Monday.

The Bulldogs’ faithful went into meltdown over the weekend when reports surfaced suggesting Klemmer had asked for a release with two-and-a-half years remaining on his deal.

It was later revealed the NSW Origin bookend was frustrated by a financial dispute following his decision to split with his long-term manager David Riolo.

Klemmer confirmed the prolonged delay with Riolo after Sunday’s record loss to Penrith, however he denied he wanted to leave the club.

This message was rammed home by Canterbury CEO Raelene Castle on Monday night.

Castle told The Daily Telegraph the Bulldogs met with Riolo to commence talks and the club were buoyant of solving the problem in the coming days.

However, it’s understood Riolo is yet to agree on a figure to part ways with Klemmer and this is delaying the pair’s business separation.

“We had a very positive meeting with David Riolo and confident we will reach a positive resolution,” Castle said.

Castle’s optimism aside, life at Canterbury hasn’t been easy this season.

The Bulldogs are sitting in 14th position after 13 rounds and look long odds to qualify for the finals.

Canterbury’s average season slumped to a new low on Sunday when suffered record loss to Penrith.

Reynolds timely return
Coach Des Hasler was filthy with the substandard effort, accusing his players of an “unacceptable” performance.

In addition to the team’s average on-field results, the Bulldogs are juggling a salary cap tightrope for next season and beyond.

This has largely come on the back of star signings Aaron Woods and Kieran Foran, which has placed pressure on the club to get under the cap in 2018.

The Bulldogs have already lost fan favourite Josh Reynolds to the Wests Tigers next year, while Sam Kasiano and Greg Eastwood could also be forced out the door.

Klemmer was particularly upset the club parted ways with Reynolds — a local junior widely considered to be the heart of the club.

The Toongabbie Tigers junior has privately expressed his frustrations about the Bulldogs to close friends and teammates.

Despite these grievances, the Bulldogs remain confident Klemmer will honour the final two-and-a-half years of his contract at the club.
