Brisbane Broncos player being investigated for assault

A BRISBANE Broncos player being investigated by police over whether he assaulted a woman is expected to be able to play in Round 1.

The Courier-Mail can reveal it is 21-year-old prop Tevita Pangai Jr, who is under investigation by police for an alleged assault, after an incident involving his girlfriend Kiki Heineback on Sunday night.

It has been claimed he “slapped and manhandled” Ms Heineback.

An NRL spokesman yesterday confirmed that the NRL Integrity Unit was aware of the matter and would monitor it in conjunction with the Broncos.

It is unlikely Pangai Jr will be stood down while the matter is investigated by police.

Police are yet to lay charges over the matter.

“Police are aware of assault allegations. The matter is being investigated,” a police spokesman said.

Ms Heineback – a 23-year-old who lives in Brisbane – yesterday declined to comment on the incident. She is listed as a personal trainer and gym instructor in Bardon.

The NRL has taken a strong stance on domestic violence issues previously, but unless there are criminal charges, it is unlikely the governing body will become involved in the dispute.

The Broncos open the NRL season against the St George Illawarra Dragons on March 8

The NRL tales a strong stance on this yet the broncos are unlikely to stand him down. Find it a little hard to get my head around that statement.

You would think that the NRL would be pretty fucking harsh about acting on things like this with strong fines given that they have been so willing to throw their support behind the anti domestic violence campaigns.

If it was a bulldogs player, the media would have made a big fuss over it. Ever since its a broncos player, it will be swept underneath the carpet.

Absolutely they should. But what is more disapointing is that the almighty broncos club act as though they are above the NRLs rule and decide that they wont be standing hime down.
A fair number of high profile players have been stood down over the past few years for similar offences, so why the fuck are the broncos not toeing the line? Are they above the rest of the clubs? Do they feel as though they are less morally obliged to the integrity of the competition?

So all we know is that she claims he "slapped and manhandled" her. Pretty loose description and no charges laid as of yet. Probably not even worth reporting at this stage with so little info.

No need for the NRL or Broncos to take any other action other than to monitor the situation and question him themselves. If he admits guilt through the questioning or the NRL is unhappy with what he says then go ahead and stand him down.
