Champion Sydney Roosters co-captain Boyd Cordner looks set to miss at least the opening 12 games of the season, with the Tricolours making a formal submission to the NRL for $350,000 in salary cap relief.
The NRL community has thrown its support behind Cordner in recent months after the NSW State of Origin captain opted to rule himself out of last year’s end-of-season series due to repeated concussions.

Cordner suffered his fourth concussion of the season playing Origin I in Adelaide last November.

Under the NRL rules, the Roosters are eligible to apply for salary cap relief because Cordner sustained the injury playing representative football.

The maximum amount NRL clubs can apply for is $350,000 – which means the player in question must be sidelined for a minimum of 12 weeks.

The Roosters have shown their hand by applying for the full $350,000.

The club has also sought the absolute best medical advice for Cordner from a variety of experts.

The Roosters co-captain is expected to opt to continue playing in the NRL provided the doctors green light his return.

The Roosters have led the way on the issue of concussion for the NRL by insisting players who suffer repeated head knocks sit out for up to six weeks.

Star players Cordner and Luke Keary have both spent extended periods of time on the sideline due to the Tricolours approach towards player welfare.

With Cordner expected to be sidelined for the opening three months of the season and club champion Mitch Aubusson retired, the Roosters are expected to turn to Angus Crichton and Sitili Tupouniua as the club’s starting edge backrowers.

The NRL confirmed to Fox Sports the Roosters formally submitted the Cordner paperwork last week.

Similar to Foran, no? If so, no cap space for the Roosters. Foran was even injured in an international game. I don't remember us getting any cap relief whatsoever.

The majpr problem with concussions is when they are repeated. He received one in the SoO. Most of them occurred at club level, should definately not get relief!!

Fuck off Roosters. They'll get what they want though no doubt. Always do. The NRL love nothing more than bending right over for a Rooster request. Corrupt as shit.

Whether or not the Roosters deserve cap relief or not is not relevant. They are one of 4 clubs the NRL bend over backwards to help. The others being Souths, Melbourne and Brisbane.

It's very relevant IMO. They get all sorts of exemptions, favours and shit that also-ran clubs don't. That's shit, totally unfair.
Agree with you about Souths, Storm and Broncos.

Roosters will run into the same trouble we did trying to find a replacement for Foran. They might be able to bring a junior into the squad but they won’t get a rep player.

I agree. They are the big 4. They get what they want. Years ago when 2020 Cowboys interim coach Josh Hannay was 17 he was refused permission to play NRL on age grounds. The Roosters have applied for an exemption for Sualli and you can bet your bottom dollar he will be allowed to play even if a brown paper bag has to change hands.

They have Tupouniua and he pretty much played better than Cordner last season anyway.

This is a great story below on NHL player Sidney Crosby and his repeated concussions, as someone who copped 6 in one year and saw a Neurologist who told me I was a dickhead if I kept playing any type of contact sport, this one shouldn’t even be discussed - he should be retiring.

Concussion is no joke...

How they going to get a medical report saying he can't play when he can.
Splitting hairs in the rule book.

And other clubs when they have run into major injury decimation of their squad apply to the NRL for approval to elevate someone outside their top 30, usually to no avail. On the other hand when the Roosters applied for it, hey presto their wish is granted. It may have happened more than once too- Lachlan Lam, Billy Smith and perhaps even Sam Verrills.

It’s going to take someone taking legal action before they get more strict on concussions. Cordner must only be one hit away from being a potato and the fact he is still trying to come back is insane. The decision needs to be taken out of the players hands for their own sake.

How the fuck can they apply for this when it's based on concussions and he suffered a million of them for the Roosters over the years? It's not as if he tore his ACL or broke his arm etc.. If anything, Cordner's history of concussions is the very definition of a pre-existing condition!

Of course they'll somehow get it approved, despite the fact that Cordner has been a walking concussion for ages and would probably knock himself out when he brushes his teeth.
