Bookmakers have little faith in recently appointed coaches Trent Barrett, Kevin Walters and Anthony Griffin lifting their clubs above the premiership cellar next season.

The TAB has issued its first betting market on the wooden spoon (most losses) for 2021, with Canterbury Bulldogs favourites at $4 from the Broncos and St George Illawarra both at $5.

Despite hiring Barrett and new chief playmaker Kyle Flanagan from Sydney Roosters, the Bulldogs are expected to show little improvement, according to the TAB.

The Belmore club finished last season with just three wins.

The Broncos finished with the wooden spoon last season after opening as an $81 chance to get the game’s most dreaded prize. They are now their shortest quote ever before the start of the season to finish on the bottom.

If anything, the Broncos roster is in worse shape than last season without both David Fifita and Jack Bird.

They are relying on Walters to reinvigorate the roster with his renowned passion.

At the Bulldogs, Barrett says he is not concerned by the TAB’s assessment of his footy team.

“They’re entitled to their opinion,” Barrett said.

“We’re confident that we can improve from last year. After being there a week, whilst knowing we have a lot of work in 14 weeks to get ready, one thing I know is we won’t get beaten on effort.”

This time last year, Gold Coast Titans were $3.50 favourites for the spoon, but are now a $26 chance on the back of five straight wins to finish last season and the recruitment of gun forwards David Fifita and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.

It'll be either Warriors or Dragons. Nathan Brown loves to win a wooden spoon and Dragons haven't improved their roster.

Warriors are a massive chance just look at Nathan Brown at Newcastle he was happy to eat 3 wooden spoons in a row and hide behind the rebuild excuse. Apart from AFB he has bought in some garbage players and if they are forced to play in Australia again I doubt Brown gets them up like Payten did.

It's hard to disagree with betting odds. If you think we're going to sign three more top/good players now's probably the time to jump on the Bulldogs making the 8. If we don't I'll be expecting something similar to what the odds suggest. My head says 13th-16th, my heart says 9th-12th as is. The exact placement is whatever and too hard to pinpoint, I just hope it isn't the wooden spoon. I still think Broncos have more talent than us (lacking leaders, inexperienced, effort levels) and 2 years ago they were top 4 in the pre season betting, fell to outside the 8 this year going into the season. We've been close to the favourites for almost 3 years now for the wooden spoon which is probably what's against us here. I'm tipping Sharks for the wooden spoon, I think they're on the decline massively and I think their coach is next gone.

Yep manly will go awful next year
They need Trbo to play 3/4 of the season and in the back end as well as getting Faniu back (the poor F's had to play Levi at hooker). Losing AFB is massive too. I think they'll have a similar season to this year, either just inside or outside the eight.
