THESE are the damaging headlines you won’t see at Belmore for at least two years.
In a remarkable show of support, all board contenders have withdrawn from Canterbury’s looming football club elections, with the current seven-man board to be returned unopposed.
The days of ugly election campaigns and board infighting at Belmore appear over.
The Daily Telegraph has been told four candidates who considered running but knew they wouldn’t have the support to unseat a board guiding the famous club back to success.
Canterbury’s board, led by chairman John Khoury, will be formally returned for another two years at the club’s AGM on February 13.
It is also a strong endorsement for new general manager of football Phil Gould and club boss Aaron Warburton.
A remarkable recruitment drive has lifted the spirits and expectations of fans, who have been forced to endure 38 losses over the past 44 games.
The window for candidates to lodge an interest in running at the election has now closed.
Bulldogs management say the board’s return will give the club stability and security.
The club’s returning board will be Khoury, Adrian Turner, Andrew Gifford, Jim Koutsouklakis, Joe Thomas, Peter McMahon and Peter Mortimer.
“We have listened to all of our members and fans and the overriding response we have got is that they want the club to get back to where we need to be,” Khoury said.
“As a board, that has meant looking at all facets of how we operate and making sure that we have returned to our traditional values.
“We have brought a lot of qualified and experienced ex- Bulldogs back into the fold, and we believe that they can help educate our younger players on what the Bulldogs are all about. To do all of that you need stability in the front office, and we now hope that we can put plans in place to make sure that we are seen as a club of choice once again.”
Warburton added: “I see this as an endorsement of the positive direction in which the club is heading. This is the stability we need.”
A stable Canterbury Leagues Club board – led by chair Peter Winchester – is closely aligned with the football club.
Despite another poor showing in 2021, Canterbury has signed Josh Addo-Carr, Max King, Matt Burton, Brent Naden, Matt Dufty, Paul Vaughan, Tevita Pangai Jr, Josh Cook and Braidon Burns, with Parramatta’s Reed Mahoney to arrive in 2023.
“The club certainly looks like it’s moving in the right direction,” Bulldogs legend David Gillespie said. “The lack of success in recent years does hurt but good times lie ahead for the Dogs.
“The board being returned uncontested shows stability.
The fact no-one challenged indicates this board has enormous support among its fans and members.
“Canterbury needed stability and that’s what this board has delivered. I’m really confident success will return to Belmore sooner rather than later.
“The pressure will be on next year given the strength of the roster now.”
