Australia launches World Cup bids
June 14, 2009 - 6:18PM

Australia officially launched its bid to host soccer's 2018 or 2022 World Cup today.
Chairman of Football Federation Australia (FFA), Frank Lowy, said it was was a realistic and achievable goal.

"Hosting the World Cup would provide Australia with an unparalleled opportunity and give Australia a lasting and living legacy for generations to come," he said.

"On the world stage, there is no event with the same level of global appeal or audience reach as the FIFA World Cup."

Lowy was joined by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and players Mark Schwarzer and Lucas Neill in launching the bid from Parliament House.

Lowy said that the cumulative global television audience at the 2006 World Cup was 26.2 billion with the single largest audience group coming from the Asian Football Confederation, of which Australia is a member.

He believed Australia's secret weapon would be its people, and the country as a destination.

Australia will face competition from England, Belgium and the Netherlands, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia, Portugal and Spain, Qatar, the United States and Russia to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cups.

We're up against some tough opposition but nothing is impossible. If we do manage to get up and win the right to host the world cup I would say it would be most likely for the 2022 word cup.

We need to have 12 world class stadiums witha a minimum 40,000 capacity though. Stadiums will be built or expanded.

2018 would be awesome but I think 2022 will be a more likely chance for us to win the hosting rights.

Yep, 2022 looks more likely

2018 looks like it will go to Europe.

So if Europe gets 2018, FIFA wont give them 2022. That leaves Japan, Mexico, Indonesia, Qatar and United States left as our competition.

Japan hosted in 2002, Mexico already twice, USA in 94.

Indonesia, Qatar no chance.

Add to that our 2000 Olympics as proof of hosting a large event

All of a sudden it doesnt look too unlikely

Also dont Fifa want most grounds (if not all) to be rectangular and we only really have 3 decent rectangle grounds now (ANZ, SFS, Suncorp)

The Melbourne one is only about 31k in capacity so it would need expanding if it was to be used

How can you say stadiums is not an issue ?

The last thing you wanna bloody be doing at a World Cup match is watching a game at a bodgey cricket ground.

tbh wacca, the gabba, scg etc wouldn't be great viewing for football, as well as the cricket pitches would get in the way. just need to do some renovations on the smaller grounds. think 2018 willgo to europe and asia or america will get 2022
