On a slightly related note, the first Coronavirus was discovered in the 1960s. The last few Coronaviruses discovered (SARS, MERS, HKU1) are all still around. They've just been weakened and we have become better at containing them. Viruses rarely disappear altogether. They generally just become part of the average seasonal disorders.

On a slightly less related note, there are many different Coronaviruses and most of them have nothing in common other than the fact that the virus looks like a Corona/crown.

Yeah. The panic is rather ridiculous. People are selling it as worse than it is. But those stats are also not accurate in relation to exposure. That's why we use percentage killed rather than total deaths. For example, 250 per month die from aspirin. But a large portion of the population takes aspirin. The current Coronavirus kills 2% approximately. Aspirin doesn't kill 2% of the people that use it. It kills less than 0.00000001%

If predictions are right and the virus spreads to 50% of the Australian population before a vaccine is developed, then there's a decent chance it'll kill over 250,000 people in Australia alone.

Coronaviruses main problem is that it spreads easily. SARS didn't spread too far and died back to the most part which is good because SARS had a kill rate of around 9%. The current Coronavirus (COVID-19) only kills around 2% but it has already killed more people than SARS and MERS combined.

Here's the comparative stats for SARS and COVID-19:
