I've always heard about Reddit but it's only recent that I've actually started to frequent it (I used to frequent Whirl Pool, not anymore) but not as much anymore.

Anyway, what exactly is Reddit? A few apps I use on iOS are always telling me to check their Reddit page for further details. I go there, and it looks like a giant internet forum. Is that all it is? I'm not even sure how to search for a certain apps Reddit page.

I'm guessing techsperts like @Mr Invisible will know about this sort of stuff... anyone else?

It's just a social network/forum where everyone can cram their shit together. A lot like Whirlpool but more global.

I don't use reddit.

I've only ever heard bad shit about it, like that it's used fo revenge porn, illegal porn and other stupid shit like 4chan.

Maybe that's right, maybe that's wrong... Couldn't be bothered with it either way.

NOTE: I know they had a crackdown heaps on it a while back (only because it was in the news).

Reddit is the home page of the internet.

There’s a thread for everything you’ve heard of and everything you haven’t. If you aren’t using it to your advantage then you are missing out.

I can see @Wahesh searching for two things on Reddit

  • How to pick up the hot chicks at work
  • How to tell the fat chewing monster to shut up

  • I don't pick up hot chicks at work, they pick me up. No kidding, they always either ask me what time I'm going, or just randomly sit at the table I'm sitting at while trying to watch the news FFS.
  • When it comes to Chewbacca, I don't need Reddit, I just ask @Mr Invisible for advice.

Or you just suffer in silence through it.
Nope. I leg it literally every time because I can't stand it. I either go for a tea, coffee, piss or just walk around pretending to talk to someone about something.

I have been on reddit for a few years, but only in the last year or so it has become my most frequently visited page.

Basically you subscribe to subreddits that interest you and it can take a while to find the subreddits that appeal to you which is why it took me a while to get really hooked on it.

Once you do get the right subs, you will find you no longer need news sites at all as anything important will hit the front page of reddit and you can get your news without having to pay news subscriptions and shit like that.

Plus there is tonnes of funny time wasting shit to keep you entertained forever.

When you say funny entertaining stuff, is that still in the form of a forum?

Sort of. The format of Reddit is different to say this forum.

If someone makes a post, like a new thread, their post stays at the top but the comments below can be filtered to appear in various ways. The default is "top" which shows you the highest rated replies as indicated by how many upvotes they have recieved. So over time, the replies get upvoted and downvoted so that the best replies find their way to the top which makes reading replies a lot better because the shit replies are filtered to the bottom for you.

You need a system like this because reddit has millions of users and everything would be unreadable if everything was posted one after another like here.

Also all subreddits have their own rules. Anyone can make a subreddit, so depending on who moderates a particular subreddit will depend on its rules.

So some subreddits are really serious, and you cannot troll. Where as others are all just people trolling.

The funny, non serious subs I frequent, I don't really ever post. I just look at the funny memes or read the funny stories and upvote and move on.

Ok Gareth so I finally decided to join... yesterday. I was wondering if you can advise me on how to locate the page or weblink or area that has all the communities I want to see posts for (what I subscribed to) when I first joined so I can view whether or not they have had any new posts. All I've been doing thus far is typing the topic in the search field... surely there has to be a quicker way to find what your subscriptions are, correct?
