Jarryd Hayne accused of sexual assault, Jack de Belin charged with sexual assault, Ben Barba sacked by the Cowboys for alleged domestic violence, Dylan Walker in court on assault charges, Greg Inglis charged with drink driving.

And then at the lower end of the scale a group of young were Sharks banned from a local establishment for their part in a brawl, while the Broncos have stood down gun youngster Payne Haas for not complying with the NRL Integrity Unit.

And yet South Sydney star Sam Burgess, who had his own family issues in the off-season, separating from his wife Phoebe after a sexting scandal, believes the behaviour of rugby league players is “as good as it’s ever been”.

Either Burgess is woefully out of touch or is suggesting there have been plenty of worse times when it’s come to the off-field exploits of NRL stars, as the game comes to terms with an off-season filled with allegedly unsavoury exploits.

“We all have a responsibility to grow the game,” Burgess said at the Fox League launch on Wednesday.

“There’s been some terrible coverage in the press but player behaviour is probably as good as it’s been over the years.

“It’s just more reported on, things catch fire a lot quicker. For all the negative press, there’s some fantastic role models and great players.”

His comments come as the Australian Rugby League Commission get set to decide whether de Belin — who is is fighting a charge of aggravated sexual assault — is to be stood down from playing duties until his court case ends.

De Belin has refused the NRL’s offer to stand down as the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) gets set to decide his fate onThursday.

De Belin and Dragons officials on Wednesday met with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, who attempted to convince him to stand down of his own accord but AAP understands that de Belin declined the opportunity and the Dragons will instead wait for the outcome of Thursday’s momentous meeting of the independent commission.

The ARLC will on Thursday discuss changing behaviour protocols so that NRL players accused of serious crimes can be stood down.

Any change in policy will open the door for de Belin to be stood down.

The NSW Origin lock has pleaded not guilty to the aggravated sexual assault of a 19-year- old woman in a Wollongong apartment.

The Rugby League Players Association has stood behind their members and opposes any change to the ARLC policy.

Many within the game have called for change, including Australia coach Mal Meninga who says a firm line in the sand needs to be drawn.

After joining the Gold Coast as the head of performance and culture, he says he delivered a strong message to the Titans playing group.

“We want our players to be leaders so there’s an expectation there, society say they’ve got to be ambassadors, they’ve got to be role models,” Meninga said. “The club is black and white on this. There is an expectation around behaviour and accountability is one of our values.

“It’s out of our DNA now — if you stuff up, we’ll support you. But if it’s serious enough, we’ve got to stand you down.”

@Mr Invisible

Is it a surprise the NRL protected species has spoken?

NB: I specifically deleted 2 certain *incidents* that the above story published as they are pure bullshit and a non-issue - I'm sure we all know what I'm talking about :grinning:

Peace out.

Burgess has an IQ lower than a piece of rotting timber. He's not in a position to really comment. I'm amazed he's not inbred.

He's barely a few points higher than Bryce Cartwright in that department tbh.
