Most won’t forget where they were when it happened but I definitely won’t being at a conference with people from American and United Airlines who were devastated. Then Ansett collapsed (pardon the poor word choice) the next day leaving many Americans stranded who couldn’t even get back to Sydney let alone home as US airspace was closed for about 72 hours after the event. It seems primitive but in those days the only direct flights to the US were from SYD. Many of them were stuck here for a week or more so we drove them to the Sunny Coast and showed them some Aussie hospitality until they were able to get home and I’m still friends with a few of those people - saw one in the US a couple of weeks ago. #9/11

Planes went into places where they shouldn't

But seriously I can't believe it was that long ago....it was a move that shaped the future
A lots happened since then :(

Whole countries collapsed :(

Momentus decisions by a whole heap of different people on all sides but no lessons appear to have been learnt.

Will we ever learn there's no winners in any kind of war.

I’ll never forget getting reading for school and watching it on tv. It honestly looked like a movie. Never thought I’d see a plane crash into a building. Still all this time later it’s still hard to believe.

Surreal images on that day that we'll never ever forget.

The best part of that show was that WTC7 fainted when the other 2 towers "fell".

I remember when it happened. It was about 1030pm here, Sports Tonight after the channel 10 news was about to talk about the Bulldogs then cut to coverage of the show.

I was burning hard they didn't talk about the Dogs.

Those poor innocent people and all the hero's involved in the rescue, many of these people were lost too in a chaos hopefully never to happen again.

To even imagine what would you do if faced with burning to death the worst way to go surely vs jumping 100's of metres to a certain death :disrelieved:

For me as a kid I'll never forget seeing the people jumping to their deaths.

Couldn't help but think they left home for work just like any other day. Just wanting to earn for their families and go home.

21 years ago a whole new conspiracy industry was born and still going strong to this very day.
You know guys, sometimes things happen exactly the way they happen.

True, probably the birth of the modern, fast moving internet conspiracy and we’ve seen some doozies in recent years with Trump and Covid. But the phenomenon itself came a lot earlier - think the ‘faked’ moon landing or JFK’s assassination among others.

It baffles me how a simple reality is overlooked by so many: when more than two people know something it’s no longer a secret. A signing to the Bulldogs is proof enough of that let alone something allegedly cooked up by Governments. I reckon a government pulling off a conspiracy is like the train that went past Belmore the day of Terry Lamb’s last game there: it was late and the players had left the field by the time it got there :tearsofjoy:.

I will cut and past this exert from a much longer essay I wrote and uploaded,

I worked many years in media and real conspiracies defiantly exist and we probably hear of only a tiny fraction of the serious criminal, political, and business wrongdoings, cover-ups, and genuine criminality both large and small that goes on behind the scenes every day, some of which can have a detrimental effect on people and society.

I believe a good workable conspiracy plan must have the following to have any real chance of success,
1: Very few people involved, just barely enough to get the job done and maintain secrecy. (This is just about impossible because someone will always spill the beans at some point either through carelessness or a fit of conscience, I mean if the president of the United States of America cant enjoy a nice quiet little blow job in the privacy of the oval office bathroom then what hope do conspirators have who are trying to take over the world?!)
2: The people involved will be dedicated to the conspiracy and/or have a vested interest in it's success and will benefit or see a benefit from their actions. (Political, religious, social or financial etc)
3: The people involved will willingly remain silent and protect each other and the conspiracy because of the above. (The threat of physical violence against a participant or their family etc is very risky to the conspirators and no guarantee of silence.)
4: The mechanics of the conspiracy must be as simple as possible and above all, subtle...

Nowadays everyone seems to know "the truth" with the exception it seems of those who were actually involved...
I would contend if you want to make million dollars nowadays, invent a new conspiracy theory or give an old one a makeover!

I once sat in on a lecture from an Oxford professor that specialises in conspiracy theories and it was a very interesting talk. She pointed out that belief in conspiracy is a complex thing driven by evolution, and it doesn't matter how smart a person is. They are still susceptible to belief in conspiracy because it's part of how we develop trust and knowledge. We naturally lean on the side of belief. If we didn't then we would never learn anything. Any time a teacher or other person tried to teach you something, you would ignore it and we would never advance.

The problem is that our ego then takes over. We trust what we learn first and if we find out that this "fact" was actually fiction, then we have to accept that we made a mistake in trusting the wrong person, and believing the wrong thing. It's much easier to ignore the truth than admit that we made an error.

And it's not just base ego. It's a part of evolution. If we admit to ourselves that everything we know could be wrong, then the response becomes Solipsism and Nihilism. What's the point of going on if we can't know anything to be true? To put it simply, to admit error is to admit that your life could be pointless. This combined with the fact that Conspiracies bring purpose into people's lives. They feel special that they are different to others. And they feel that they are achieving something by fighting for their cause. They really believe they are warriors of truth, but it's actually just an urge to be something more than they are.

Of course there's a way to admit your errors and still combat Nihilism, and that is to have an impact on the world and on other's lives. That tricks your brain into thinking that you actually have purpose then you no longer need conspiracies to make you happy. You don't have to be a rocket surgeon, just do something that really helps others. That works just as well as believing in crazy Conspiracies.
