News ‘Put us on the map’: Bulldogs’ groundbreaking jersey idea … and why it may face roadblocks

The English superleague have been doing it for years. Think they every year allocate numbers to players.
So for example using the bulldogs squad of 30 last year. Blake Taffe would have been our ‘1’ for 24 and Connor Tracey may have been jersey 19 to 30. Then going into this year Tracey may be no 1 for 2025 and Taffe may be jersey 22 or similar.
Also think the bulldogs wanted to use it for Vegas as a promotional to get spectators outside the normal league public to get to know players names.
It’s been a thing in origin for years and having the year by year name allocated to a number may limit the soccer look of random numbers all over the place. When I was young a goalie wore no 1. Now they have their ‘brand no’ say 70 or 20 like a basket ball player.

How are you gonna fit names like Mark Nawaqanitawase on a jersey without making it too small to read

Only 1 char less than Suluka-Fifita , and im sure he wont be the last player coming through with a longer name as these double barrel names are in vogue now.. We have a few currently in the lower grades with even longer names too. Mikal Papalii-Talanai, Jaedyn Tuigamala-Nicholas etc. Also better hope no one graduates from the Fijian academy either, cant imagine they are all Kings and Smiths.

Guess @TwinTurbo doesn't care about our players, present or future :anguished:

"Mark. N"
Or up to the player, with reasonable and logical sense of thought for the name. Obviously can't have "Sexy Druglord" but Marky Mark, or shortening of his last name will be ok. Person with long last name might already have a shortened version they use on the streets or informally , or a nickname.

Did Twin Turbo shag your girlfriend in front of you, or was it that he insisted that it happen without you watching that made you mad at him?

I agree but the biggest change for it to work would be to scrap the traditional positional numbers. The players name/brand would need to be aligned with a player number.

Example
mohamed salah at Liverpool has 11 as his player number. Nobody else whilst he is at the club ever plays in the number 11. Michael Jordan had 23 as his number and so on.

if you are going to market players with their names on the back. The players also need a fixed number associated with them.
im a traditionalist but im coming around to your logic... starting to think that we must change to what already works for the rest of the world in that respect....

I think the current structure went back to calling the games on radio with a pair of Binoculars sitting on the sidelines aka Frank Hyde and others the rest seems to be just tradition and custom rather than marketing and business driven decisions.

Bally's corporation has bailed them out.
Yeah I know so why cover the logo?
Did they terminate the sponsorship as part of the - ahem - ‘horse’ trading??

Apparently in Newzeland it’s illegal to promote gambling on jerseys or advertise gambling on jerseys.
Really? Didn’t know that.
So it was just for the one game?
That’s a lot of teams that have to re-jig their kit for the trip over the ditch then.

Id personally hate to see the traditional positional numbers changed.

Maybe they could promote their personal Bulldog number that is assigned when they are welcomed into first grade eg Stephen Crighton Bulldog 854?

Really highlight it on their jersey and not just the training shirts?
