The Bulldogs’ hope to add surnames to the back of NRL playing jerseys may face a few roadblocks.

Bulldogs CEO Aaron Warburton says the proposed move is a chance to “put the Bulldogs on the map”, however it has been revealed by Code Sportsthat for it to be ticked off, all 17 NRL teams will need to support the idea.

Apeaking on SEN radio on Monday, Warburton says the Bulldogs have included the jersey proposal in their submission to be one of four teams to open the season in Las Vegas next year.

Either a sponsor’s logo will have to be removed entirely or made smaller to fit the player’s name.

“We don’t want to approach any particular sponsor with, ‘This is how we are going to diminish your brand awareness’,” Warburton explained.

“Some of the early research has suggested it will actually amplify it just in terms of the amount of interest and eyeballs on that space.

“The size of the logo, anything you do with that by reducing it will reduce the value of it.”

The only time an NRL team have had names on their jersey was in 1998, when the Storm did it for their debut season.

It’s likely that the Bulldogs won’t be able to be the only team to have names. If the proposal is agreed upon at some stage, all teams will have to display surnames on the back of their jerseys.

Why not be the only team if they want to? It’s bad enough all the websites are identical.

Smart move to do it for the USA market. Even if 1% of the crowd is locals they’ll be able to spot the names of the players. Maybe Burton gets a mega deal for NFL from it :p

So true why are the Nrl so hell bent on having everything the same they should promote the differences in clubs

What does that mean?

I don't think it means all 17 teams have to agree to have their players names on their jerseys.

All we need is for all 17 Teams to agree to allow us to have our players names on the jersey.

Not the same thing.

Back of jersey sponsors would be affected/minimised/removed or altered/repositioned for all 17 clubs which means revenue impact and or renegotiate contracts. Some of these clubs are heavily reliant on sponsorship income. Yes they get a grant.
That's what it means.
I work in an area adjacent to this.
I love the idea though. They should be discussing it.

I thought the names are only for the 4 teams that go to Vegas in 2026. (If the Dogs are one of them)

Everything seems so generic. I like how Garry Larson used to have extended sleeves on his jersey.

What benefit would our club get from this? I can only see the players benefiting

I'm not sure how much more revenue as it were would really be helped with this. I understand the concept of spreading the fanbase and market for the NRL as a whole but not sure if this will help all that much. Jmo.

We sell jerseys with players names on them for more $'s than we sell jerseys with no names on them.
Bonus if we sell more jerseys.

SEN was saying their jersey sales increased 400% when Kelce started dating Swift. It increased 400% because it was little girls buying Kelce jerseys.

He outsold even Mahomes jerseys.

There’s nothing wrong with this proposal.
If you want a jersey with a players name on it you should be able to get it and the player should get a little slice. If you want an unnamed jersey you can get that too and the club gets that little bit extra.
we do it in rep games and no one says shit? Now they’re losing their minds??

Jammer and that Charlie White were talking about this too in the last day or two, seems to be a lot of outside support who exactly is up in arms about it the NRL?

Not sure about players having a unique number which was discussed and which they carry that number with them like in the cricket for example, I'd rather see it stick to the 1-17 as per playing position each week.
E.g Sexton is the team 7 if he is out injured and Tia comes in he is no.7
