Panthers deputy chairman Greg Alexander got a little fired up on Wednesday night when it was put to him that his club had double standards over the Matt Burton contract saga.
The 21-year-old has signed a deal with the Bulldogs for 2022 and beyond but the club are desperate to get him to Belmore this season.
Burton is stuck behind Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai and has started the season off in reserve grade.

The Panthers won’t budge though, despite there being a first grade spot waiting for him at Canterbury, unless they get a similar player in return.

Penrith argue that Burton is under contract, however many fans have called into question that sentiment given the club released Josh Mansour early from his contract because they weren’t going to play him in first grade.

Paul Kent suggested to Alexander that the club is not being fair to Burton considering how quick the Panthers were to axe under-contract Mansour.

“Why is it OK for you to call in Josh Mansour and say ‘mate, you won’t be playing first grade next year so go now’ and yet Matt Burton who has a contract sitting at another club, wants to go and you guys go ‘no, you have to stay’,” Kent asked Alexander on NRL 360.

“Because Josh Mansour was on more money than he should have been,” Alexander responded.

“Too much money that we could pay him again next year and not re-sign one of the players we desperately needed to keep,” he added.

Kent questioned how the Panthers were being fair, to which Alexander fired back questioning how he could think anything in the ruthless world of NRL contracts is fair.

“But why is it fair for you to get rid of him and not let Matt Burton go?” Kent said.

“Who’s fair? Are you serious? Are you being serious saying fair?” Alexander responded.

The rest went a little like this...

Kent: “There are plenty of people that think that. There are plenty of people wondering why it’s OK for you guys to tap someone on the shoulder...”

Alexander: “Those people have got no idea about how the game works and if you can name some of those people I’d love to give them a call and say, ‘are you kidding me?’”

Alexander: “He’s under contract.”

Kent: “Josh Mansour was under contract.”

Alexander: “So what. Josh Mansour was out the door.”

Poor Josh would be feeling pretty crap right now, not to mention being dropped this week from the South’s team.
Wasn’t his fault he got offered the big $’s.
The guy gave his all for Penrith and they treated him with no respect - don’t think for a second their other players won’t be thinking the same thing could happen to them.
We have had our own problems over the years but nothing like the toxic culture at Penrith.

Is Alexander being a bit of a ****? Yes. Would we have liked to hear our CEO say these very same things when Klemmer asked for a release??? Yes. If the shoe was on the other foot, we would all have nothing to say.
He’s still a ****...

I don't like Alexander, but he's not wrong in this case. Clubs allow players early releases all the time, but Burton isn't on much coin and is a very handy backup, so it's obviously going to be harder for him to get his release. Still hope he does, but let's be honest, it's highly unlikely.

Nrl 360 has been painful and boring to watch this year so far. It started with their first episode for the year where the first half hour was them banging on about Cronk coaching at 2 clubs, which nobody gives a shit about

We should stop worrying about burton and worry about what we can control. Clearly out go forward is an issue we are getting monstered. Do we have anyone available in the squad who can do a better job. We lost yesterday because the panthers pack controlled the middle and their halves played with speed off the back of that. Who I’m the Mounties can come in and add some horsepower to the engine room?
