I was not implying you mentioned salary cap. I was just stating the benefits at the time (80's) would have been to pay cash to players. And it seems the only benefit in those does days was to dodge tax.

From the NRL website "The NSWRL first introduced a salary cap to Rugby League in 1990 and the NRL has had a salary cap since its inception in 1998." According to this there was no salary cap in the 80's when this happened. So maybe the brown paper bag was more about dodging the tax man.

I think Crichton's start date is due next year. His last rep game was Oct 21st, which takes start date to Dec 23rd, during Christmas break As of 2021, players who have completed four pre-seasons or fewer receive 7 weeks break while those above that bracket received 9 weeks.
