Sharks fans are grinning like Cheshire cats at their Tolman acquisition.

The Sharks are averaging 24pts/game without their key playmaker so the old Tolman stifling the attack chestnut doesn’t seem to hold much weight other than amongst semen soaked armchair experts.

We 100% should’ve retained him for another year or 2 especially considering the laziness and sheer lack of defensive steel amongst the remaining middle forwards at the club. Let’s have a look at the numbers comparing the work of Tolman from the bench for the Sharks against our 4 x Props so far this year;

TOLMAN
2021 averages: 110m per game, 32 tackles per game @ 98% efficiency

OGDEN
2021 averages: 84m per game, 19 tackles per game @ 91% efficiency

HETHERINGTON
2021 averages: 92m per game, 25 tackles per game @ 88% efficiency

TOOMAGA
2021 averages: 74m per game, 23 tackles per game @ 93% efficiency

NAPA
2021 averages: 63m per game, 21 tackles per game @ 92% efficiency

Disgraceful numbers from our middles who have not stepped up to the plate. Many here won’t like to admit it but we are sorely missing Tolmans middle craft, particularly the extra work he got through, communication and cover defence. Our defence has been downright embarrassing and the loss of Tolman is a big reason for this.

Let’s hope Thompson stays fit as he’s by far our best middle forward, but we desperately need the others to step up.

Completely agree with you Horse. It’s a disgrace seeing him in other colours. We’ve lost one of the leagues most underrated forwards and champion bloke. Very poor call moving him on.

Tolman
110 average metres gained/49 average minutes
= 2.2 metres gained/minute

Ogden
84/35
= 2.4

Hetherington
92/52
= 1.8

Atoni
75/35
= 2.1

Napa
64/31
= 2.1

The tackle efficiency is good from Tolman (how much does team come into equation? we're getting dominated every week).

Tolman averages more minutes than most of our props so we need to be careful with metres per game (and tackles made). Hetherington is the only prop out of that lot that averages more minutes and he isn't a metre eater type forward (always has had low metre gained stats).

I think we need (and needed) better than what we currently have (excluding Thompson) and Tolman.

The argument has always been that Tolman was the least of our worries and should’ve been retained as he goes forward, and was integral to our defence not just through the work he got through but because of his communication. Our defence looks absolutely shot to bits this year conceding nearly 40pts/game so far.

Thanks for providing the further work rate per minute stats as it further highlights the lack of output from our current props. Tolmans output per minute is still higher than all of our props despite being asked to play more time.

This kind of mentality will not get us out of this situation, the last couple weeks you’ve suggested how it’s was better with pay and tolman lmaoo... and how is that gonna get us out of this situation?
we are moving forward with barrett, Steve Hansen is on board, so get on board

I’m on board but I wish I could be as optimistic as you Alzz. Facts are we’ve strengthened the roster but we’re getting belted week in week out by bigger margins than ever. Questions need to be asked and this piece of recruitment is one of them

Both had to go, but we kept the worst one for this year, would rather have Tolman and that’s saying something lol.!!

He kept the middle tight in defence. Always tidying up, slowing the ruck, doing the dirty work, turning up when others had given up. Smart and consistent, so professional.

Absolutely mate. And he’s been doing that week in week out in the middle for 280+ games. I admire the hell out of him. Terrific player and terrific clubman.

He was a rock for us. One of those blokes that teammates love, because he never lets them down.

And a man of character off the field too.
So is Jackson who is our captain courageous and how’s that going for us? Tolman would make no difference to this squad and flabbergasted that people miss him. 95% of the players we have had the last few years must be gone at the end of the season for us to improve.

Hetherington is a better prop than Tolman because he actually bends the line. Tolman is still a great workhorse but that is it.

We are leaking points not because we signed Hetherington over Tolman, but because of the other forwards we have hanging around not pulling their weight that won't be there next year: Napa, Atoni, Ogden. All three are lazy and ontop that you have a rubbish hooker and ageing Jackson trying to tie up the middle.

It's a rebuild, and they are slowly getting rid of the guys not part of our future, signing Tolman to play off the bench wouldn't have been a move forward. It's not about 2021.
