Smith coached 680 games without winning a premiership, around 98 of them in ESL, with 368 of those post Super League (ie; NRL). Cleary is currently at 354, so he could pass Smith this year on NRL games only but he would have to coach (without a premiership) for the next 13 or so years to catch Smith in total.

Go Dogs
So I guess those who reported it based on by not winning the 2020 GF, it means he will coach at least another 20 odd games before his next GF opportunity in 21 and will hold the NRL Era title for most games coached without a premiership.

Yeah sounds about right.. Just goes to show how salty the panthers are when it comes down to business and the real culture at the club.
Yep you'd think professionalism and common sense would rule over emotion and pettiness.

maybe sometimes our club is smarter then we give them credit for
Having a good name in clubland can be a handy thing. We aren't unreasonable. Likely factored in some or all of our recent big signings, and will continue to do so.

Ivan, mean while, has done himself no favours. Playing hard ball over a youngsters future and making such a laughable claim that Burton would be better off spending a season out of position is going to make more players wary of signing long deals under him.

Going to depend somewhat on what happens, but if Burton plays a handful of games with Panfers next season out of position and then in 22 kills it with us playing 5/8, it is going to make Ivan look really bad. Club recruitment people have long memories, as do agents, and this will get used against him for the rest of his career.

‘‘And we also think it’s best for him personally to stay in our system for another year so he can further develop – it’s our opinion that it’s best for him in the long run he stays with us another 12 months. We know people are agitating for it [an early release] to happen, but everyone has been well aware of our position for a long time.’’

I find this quote to offensive and extremely egotistical from a coach who has never won a premiership.

I really hope the Panthers tank next year and expose Cleary for the flog that he is.

if he had simply said burton is an important part of the squad and left at it at, not much anyone can say really. to then go on with his development crap just showed everyone what a petty and spiteful dick he is.
i agree that it doesn't hurt the club to act in a decent way when doing business

The knob Ivan Cleary doesn’t realise hes costing Burton a few hundred K just out of spite. But its all good for him to renege on his contract with the tigers to coach his precious son.
Panthers are not letting him go out of spite. Because we're chasing their star players hard ,we might have missed out last time but that doesn't mean we wont offer chrighton 600,000 a season to get him to the dogs, barret is a crafty fellow watch him work his magic like he already has, and will again garenteed.

If he's so important to you why not play him in the 6 then.. he's behind tryone may.. Nepotism at its best! Stop stunting his growth and also give the kid a break so he can earn top dollar

Cleary could have defused the issue quite easily... they congratulate Burton on his decision to move on, are convinced that he has a big future ahead of him and wish him well for 2022 onwards but he remains an important member of their squad, that the Panthers club has banked on Burton being with Penrith for 2021, especially considering that their starting halves both got picked for the NSW Origin squad and Burton represents excellent cover for both and thus, their/his responsibility is to Penrith... easy

at some point, the alibiing for Cleary needs to stop

It's time to wipe that fake smile of his face....we should go all out for Crichton. If signing Burton gave them the shits, signing Crichton should give them a major case of diarrhea, verbally and physically. :grinning:

Didn't the CEO and chairman both say they were willing to release Burton early if they got a good deal. They are the decision makers so who gives a fuck what Clearly (their employee) thinks. I wouldn't be reading too much into it. The thing that shits me the most is that condescending "better for his development" statement. I'm sure Matty would have wanted to tell Ivan to shove it up his ass when he heard that dribble.

It looks like the deal they're after is Mansour based on the fact that they're willing to let Laurie go early if the Tigers sign Mansour. For some unknown reason Mansour doesn't seem to want to go to the Tigers...probably the same reason JAC didn't want to go

We dont need backs though. Already too many...Hopoate, DWZ, Meaney, Cotric, JAC (2022), Okunbor, Averillo. 7 players For 5 positions. Already hard to figure who gets left out, and worse when JAC arrives
