Panthers assistant coach Trent Barrett will remain at the foot of the mountains for the rest of this season as Canterbury-Bankstown ramp up plans to get him to Belmore.
Barrett signed a two-year deal with the Panthers for this season and next year but has a get-out clause should an NRL head coaching position become available.

The Bulldogs want Barrett to come in and fix Canterbury-Bankstown’s diabolic attack where the club is averaging 10.4 points per game.

It’s a big call for Barrett, who had three seasons at Manly and took the Sea Eagles to a finals series in 2017 before falling out with club powerbrokers in 2018.

Barrett has since enjoyed 12 months away from the NRL and then returned at Penrith this season where he’s helped transform the Panthers attack.

The question Barrett needs to answer is does he want to walk into the political sh*t sandwich that is Canterbury-Bankstown right now?

The club is currently anchored to the bottom of the NRL in 16th place, has no major sponsor and is riddled with factionalism and infighting.

There has been speculation chair Lynne Anderson’s position is under threat with figures around the club angling to call an extraordinary general meeting.

But Fox Sports has been told now the club has made the key decision surrounding ex-coach Dean Pay’s future the threat to Anderson is expected to be put on hold.

There was an element of the Bulldogs board who wanted to show loyalty to Pay but patience eventually ran out after the club’s eighth loss in nine games against the Brisbane Broncos last Saturday.

Pay was understandably fuming after the club decided to go in a different direction for 2021 and decided to walk immediately.

The Bulldogs champion front rower broke the news to his players on Tuesday morning and then drove out the gates of Belmore.

Assistant coach Steve Antonelli immediately followed due to his loyalty to Pay, leaving Steve Georgallis in charge.

One positive for the Bulldogs is they are a powerful brand armed with a $3 million cheque book for next season to enter the player market.

There’s not much around at the moment but as is always the way in this day and age players on contract will be squeezed out of clubs at the end of this year.

Does Barrett wait until the end of this season to make a call on an NRL head coaching position given there are guaranteed to be other opportunities?

There could be as many as three other NRL coaching positions available given the uncertainty at North Queensland Cowboys, St George Illawarra and Cronulla.

Or does he back himself in his second coming as an NRL head coach to guide a complete basket case of a club away from the bottom of the ladder?

There’s a school of thought it can’t get any worse for Canterbury-Bankstown.

And if you’re the coach who steers them back towards the finals and a premiership then that rubberstamps your NRL credentials.

Barrett needs to make sure he gets this decision right.

The smart money says he will sign a three-year deal to be the new Canterbury-Bankstown coach in the coming days.

I don't agree with Barrett but if they do sign him three years would be too long for a coach with his record.

3 years, wow...... seems we are going all out to secure him. I get it, why would anyone come to a club that is coming last for anything less then that. But 3 years would be 1.5 million + lots of money for a coach with a 40% record. And doubt he will do what pay did and take a pay cut when the finances were wearing thin during the lock down.

I can see him preferring the dragons to be honest. He'd be mad to come early, when his current team looks certain to make the second or even 3rd weeks of the play offs. And on another point, if we will wait until the offseason to pick up players then we are in a worse predicament then I thought. Would have thought we would have 3-4 players ready to go who were just waiting for the confirmation of a coach. If we get Barrett and he doesnt come until november then things arent great at all.

Still hope we do a proper recruitment before jumping the gun. There are atleast half a dozen coaches with more credentials. Barrett has so far proved himself as a great assistant but lacks a lot of experience and success as a head coach.

Article on TK with Ennis sums it up best. We need someone with experience. Bring in Anthony Griffin. Chuck Kimmorley next to him. Buy a genuine half and hooker. Let's do it

If he is going to accept the challenge he should be really smart and do it now, otherwise he is going to get stuck with the decisions made for the next 5 months. Either that or no decisions will be made while we wait on him starting and he'll have a month to recruit the players that he wants before pre season starts, with Xmas in the middle. Pretty stupid to wait if he is going to accept it, that is if it has even been offered to him.

Then there is the chance that if he doesn't take it now that we will find someone else who will. Wane for example, he's not busy right now, he could start work in 14 days (a la Thompson). Take the time off if there ends up being Internationals to coach England (unlikely).

Is this actually true? Seems more like Pay did her and the board a favour by publicly calling on them to make a decision.

Any coach who signs with the Bulldogs should have in their contract that the Anderson’s cannot and will not meddle in coaching decisions including team selections and recruitment

How about we wait and see if it actually eventuates, then maybe give him a full pre-season and the first few rounds of 2021 to see what he can do and if he has learnt from his mistakes at Manly. TK blows up everyone before people even get a chance. Some of the nutters on here are not much better than our dysfunctional board lol

Whoever the Coach is we need him asap as they need to get players for next year. Imagine the pack of muppets that will be here waiting for the new coach if our club goes and does it? Be like, well the team we have now!

Isn't that one of the criticisms of Des? That he had too much control?

As long as the incoming coach isn't allowed to stuff up the farkin Salary Cap, we can recover much quicker next time. It's a pretty simple principle, just make sure that there's around 1/3rd of the cap available and 10 roster spots freed up every single year. That way no matter how deep the hole is we can get out of it in 1 year, 2 years at the most.
