The NRL Appeals Committee today issued its decision in respect of appeals brought by Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs players Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera.

Mr Okunbor and Mr Harawira-Naera’s registrations as NRL Players were cancelled on 1 April following a finding of serious breaches of the league’s Code of Conduct in the lead-up to a trial match in Port Macquarie in February 2020.

Whilst confirming the seriousness of the breaches, the Appeals Committee varied the NRL’s determination to cancel each player’s registration and imposed alternate sanctions, being:

Mr Okunbor to be suspended for 14 Matches, pay a fine of $22,500 and undergo such course of counselling or community service as the NRL CEO may direct;

Mr Harawira-Naera to be suspended for 10 Matches and to pay a fine of $15,000.

“The NRL took the action which it considered necessary given the serious breaches of the Code of Conduct – breaches the Appeals Committee also found to be serious,” said NRL Acting CEO Andrew Abdo.

“The independent appeals committee has taken a different view on what penalty the players should face and although we are disappointed, we respect the outcome.”

WHAT? They did not need to be deregistered. If either of them go to different clubs, thats an absolute farce in principle. Only really want CHN back

Wait. So they are registered with the dogs again? When does the suspension start? From rnd 1 this year? Or from now?

Interesting. There’s our Top 30 sorted then and likely puts rest to the rumours about Lafai. Interesting also that the NRL, even post Greenberg felt it necessary to say they’re ‘disappointed’ but ‘accept’ the appeal decision. Will await a statement from the Bulldogs for clarity.

So if I'm reading this right they are both still Bulldogs players and suspension back dated to when they stopped playing.

I'm honestly going to be happy to have both players back assuming the club has no objection. CHN is a great player and if Okunbor gets his handling up to standard he could go on to be a great player.

So, can we have them back now? CHN is technically finished with his suspension from this upcoming game, with Okunbor 4 games to go.

CHN can play next week as he would have served 10 games. Okonbor still another 4 weeks.

Imagine they will both need to self isolate though and be back in bubble in 2 weeks

Probably the best result all round really. Long suspension, some public humiliation, big fine but now a chance to redeem.

Some bloody sensible measures.

Club should have been on top of this from the start. Bunch of amateurs who let it get out of their control with no feasible remediation.

The players were always going to be able to have such harsh penalties as loss of career and income reversed IMO.

Dumb players of course.... but our Club look like babes in the woods again :(

I think based on what lynne said last week about being too hasty they realised they fucked up and sacking them so quickly good on them for owning it at least ,great news if true
