The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will make a call on the future of coach Dean Pay within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The Bulldogs have privately told Pay the coach will be given the opening eight to ten weeks of this season to win a new contract.

But with the club currently sitting 16th with only one win from their opening nine games amid the worst attack in the NRL, the chances of Pay remaining at Belmore beyond this year seem highly unlikely.
Perhaps one of the most telling indications of where Pay’s future lies is the way the coach was frozen out of contract talks with Canberra Raiders representative flyer Nick Cotric last week
Bulldogs chair Lynne Anderson and CEO Andrew Hill held a zoom meeting with Cotric last Friday but the current Bulldogs coach was nowhere to be seen.

The next question for the Bulldogs to resolve will be if they tell Pay he will no longer be at the club next year, will the coach want to see out the season?

The cruel reality for Pay is Saturday night’s performance against the Bulldogs had powerbrokers seeing red.

As much as the Bulldogs are now missing two of their best players in Adam Elliott and Will Hopoate the lack of creativity in attack was still seen as a major fail.

Pay has continually tried to shake things up in terms of key position playmakers but the playing group has been unable to produce the desired result.
Lachlan Lewis, Jack Cogger and more recently Brandon Wakeham have all been tried in the halves alongside Kieran Foran.

On Saturday night Sione Katoa started at hooker with Jeremy Marshall-King on the bench.

It mattered little. The Bulldogs still looked a thousand kilometres away from being able to create points.
With Pay understandably frustrated at the repeated questioning about his own future, the Bulldogs understand the need to make the call.

Trent Barrett has emerged as the leading contender to take over from Pay for next season

Well if he wasn't even allowed to be in a meeting with Cotric then how could he stay? Love how we played the Bulldogs the other night too.

Time to see if the media has finally thrown a dart that's hit the bullseye.

Barrett?

Record of 29 wins from 73 starts with a strong Manly roster at his disposal. No thank you.

Unless they’re gonna pull Bellamy out of a hat then we should be sticking with Deano to see what he can do under fairer conditions next year.

I think this sums it up nicely:

Manly with Barrett (2018): 15th.

Signed: Hodkinson, Elliot, Elgey, Garrick
Lost: Brown, Hastings, Kelly, Lane, Uate, Winterstein, Wright x2

Manly with Des (2019): 6th.

Almost as sideways as it comes. Unless there is a top coach available Pay should be our coach next year.

All those players you listed that Manly signed are shit so you aren't helping your case. The playing ground was split with team Hastings vs team DCE also

what fair conditions?
Yes the side is piss poor, but he just isn’t a coach. Any chance he may of had is all but gone, his shot look at him in the presser the last 3weeks. Not only does pay need to leave the whole coaching staff need to pack up and go.

Yes so with the same squad (actually losing two good players in Kelly and Lane) Des went from 15th to 6th. I'm helping my case massively actually.
