I think there was an element of that thinking - that, because Bullfrog's daughter was on the Board, the club would automatically default to the good old days.

I am on the boards of a couple of non profit organisations, and running them is never as easy as the members would believe; but we have ensured that we have a balance of people with business, and accounting backgrounds. It may be a way of life for members; but it is also a business, first and foremost.

A good board needs to be able to handle the here and now; and have an achievable target, with measurable timelines, for the future.

Just having a wish list of what the members want is no recipe for success. There has to be a definite plan that members believe can be achieved, and a method for them to be able to gauge its success as it rolls out.

What is the Bulldog's plan and measurable timeline? Just throwing out a line like - "to be competitive in 2024" doesn't cut it.
"to be competitive in 2024" is the new "2 premierships by 2019"

the board is living on borrowed time... I cant believe they wasted 2 years to plan for 2021.... any rival ticket formed will win in 2022 with the similar approach in 2018

fans and members cant wait for 2022!

That seems the crux of the problem.

Minimal forward planning and liaison with player managers as to when, and who, is off contract and what it would take to sign $ and fill the key positions we need.

They appear to have done a good hatchet job clearing out the joint but in over their heads with the reality of negotiating to secure players.

They went the full hog with 2 flying over to get Thompson but that appears to have sucked the juice out of their effective efforts for the rest of the roster improvement.

Lets hope there's more signings and announcements soon but in the meantime the clubs reputation continues to be downgraded and thats on them and no one else at this time.

You do know the old board sacked Des and the new board had to negotiate a payout?

hello did I say that?
I said that was when the rot truly set in, when Des was sacked. Since then our once great club was been spiralling down.
BTW boards are like governments, when a new one comes to power they own all the history and are responsible for all the decisions of the previous government / board.

Monday Buzz: the man leading coup to overthrow famous Bulldog name
Canterbury’s on-field performance in 2020 has left a lot to be desired but it’s behind-the-scenes where things are taking an even darker turn.

Lynne Anderson knows the dogs are barking loudly at Belmore.

Away from the locker rooms another boardroom brawl is looming over her future as chair.

Ironically, Sunday was the 20th anniversary of the passing of her father, the legendary Canterbury CEO Peter Moore.

A move is likely to be made within the next few days to try to talk Anderson into standing down.

Anyone would think they are going as bad as the Broncos such is the bitterness and unrest.

It doesn’t matter that their expectations were nothing like Brisbane’s at the beginning of the year.

Disgruntled members are trying to gather enough numbers to call for an extraordinary general meeting, the equivalent of a no-confidence vote in the board.

Anderson knows what is happening behind the scenes.

“When you’re down there are plenty of people wanting to throw stones and kick you,” she says, “I’m aware of it and I’m not surprised you are hearing about it.”

The main player in the move to oust the chair is a powerful lobbying specialist at Belmore and the same man who engineered the last boardroom coup to remove Ray Dib in early 2018.

He has now turned on the board, urged on by members, and officials with whom he had lunch with in Parramatta last Wednesday.

Right now the Bulldogs are seriously struggling. It’s not just about the two competition points each weekend, their position on the ladder or the game against the Rabbitohs on Sunday evening.

Ray Dib. Picture: Christian Gilles

They have no major sponsor, no permanent home ground, no new signings outside of English forward Luke Thompson, and still no decision has been made on a coach for 2021 and beyond.

The delay in making a decision on Dean Pay is hurting their recruitment plans.

No more big-name players will commit to the club until they know who is coaching the side.

The team’s poor roster and performances are making it impossible to sign a major sponsor, particularly with the corporate world struggling post COVID-19.

Both their leagues club and football club lost millions of dollars last year, long before COVID-19.

The league’s club is $45 million in debt but has a $100 million property asset in Liverpool.

Your columnist asked Anderson over the weekend if she would be prepared to walk away.

“I haven’t even thought about it,” she said.

“We’re in a situation where we know we have to do better and no-one is denying that.

“It’s been a challenge over the last two and a half years but we’re moving forward.

“Other clubs have had tough years. Parramatta and Newcastle. They were given time to rebuild.”

There has also been suggestions the Lynne’s husband, former premiership winning coach Chris Anderson, is interfering in management areas where he shouldn’t be.

He was forced to stand down from the board over a collapsed business, owing millions of dollars.

Lynne denies Chris is still involved.

Still, the new board promised a lot but has delivered virtually nothing.

“They procrastinate over everything and can’t make a decision,” said one insider.

The Bulldogs have finished 12th, 12th and 11th in the last three years and are currently sitting on the bottom of the premiership table.

Anderson makes no apologies for her loyalty to Pay and the fact a decision has been delayed to give him every chance to win some football games.

Plus she is hoping the members show her the same faith and patience.
Firstly she's too old, we need a fresh new look at what needs doing and this board has had plenty of time, we can't even beat a team who are off their game (Souths) it's not good enough, Pay has had more than enough time to show there's improvement in this side but every game we reach a new low.
I'd be surprised if we win one more game this season and that is on the board/coach, the sooner their gone the better!!!

its clearly obvious that shes a fraud, just as much as raelene and needs to resign....

this board has fulfilled nothing.

haven't bought any of the top youth like the said they would.
they have not brought "pride and respect" to the bulldogs brand.
they have not made a us "the best brand in Australian sport"
they have not signed a major sponsor.
they have not got a clue on who our coach is next year.
They did not increase our junior nursery to Fiji and PNG, and other second tier nations like they said they would - I clearly remember "we want to unearth the next semi radradra"

all they've done is a write a few letters to our fans and sucked half of you in....

Paul Dunne
Lynne Anderson
Chris Anderson (unofficial capacity)
Steve Price
Andrew Hill

please resign today! do not bring our club through the mud, hang it up, you have all "tried" but your effort has succumb to nothing, please move along.

Who is even confident that they will get things in place by 2022 either? I’m not. I think Anderson has been in a massive comfort zone since 2018 she got a free ride off the back of the previous boards mistakes and then she was re-elected unopposed a few months ago.

I just hope a rival ticket is formed that’s diverse with people from different business and football backgrounds. At the very least it applies more pressure to the current board and they know they’ll be gone if they don’t get things done. If that’s sooner then the next election do be it but Anderson has her feet to the flames now she’s not responding very well.

Thanks fella. You’ve just given me a good line for the next birthday card I write. Nothing like some warm and fuzzy feelings with your nearest and dearest when you write ‘You’re OK, you’re not as delusional as them’ :-):

I’ll let Lynne and Chris respond directly...

if I was a voting member I would leave the current board and chair in place. They may have their faults but if you want the dogs to move forward , keep away from board/faction fighting otherwise it will be a decade of misery .
I would also like to quote @bradyk favourite comment , they have built a $3m war chest or more after the horrific cap situation, they should be able to make use of it and be judged on it, and he is spot on.

The other issue is (either former board or leagues club power brokers If I recall correctly ) the others not on board approaching players aka Mitchell and trying to recruit players , it is not their role to be involved in recruiting and also shows the dysfunction of factions at war (side note LM only played 1 good game against Gold Coast with Bennett as coach , current board in hindsight geniuses not to have offered him a contract ). Anyway this factional fighting is exactly parramatta of the 2000s and look what it has taken them to recover (government to step in)

call me cynical but the kennel will be played by the factions and I think it has already begun when you have someone join day before this article and exclusively post comments (close to 100) about the board and also asks members if they are members .

get ready for self interest to rule the club instead of what is best for the club and be ready for sustained mediocracy for a decade with this factional fighting .

The club desperately needs a “unity board” come the next election. This split within the stalwarts of the club has gone like all such disputes go, it only weakens the club.

I know for a fact that Steve Waugh was sounded out in the past to come onto the board. What we need is a Steve Waugh type as chairman or chairwoman, that is to say a national icon, beyond reproach and with no association with intra club feuds and infighting that has happened in the past. Also needs to be well connected within the Australian sporting and corporate landscape.

Its clear as day we need to move away from a board full of former players who run their own business and get a much more corporate focus.

A fresh approach with a board without baggage of the past would be nice too but it will never happen.

Good post. Obviously a dollop (maybe a scoop) of cynicism but you’re right - warring factions are going to do more harm than good. My view is that after 4 years (come next election) it’s inevitable that there is (and should be) an alternative ticket to test the incumbents and outline their vision for the club. The members will decide accordingly. For whatever reason no alternative ticket stood just 5 months ago but suddenly there’s so much noise. I think the talk of an EGM is overstated and whoever feels they can assemble a better approach from 2022, well get planning and let’s hear it. I’ll certainly listen but for the sake of the club the current agitation should stop.

this is decided by the members in the end I guess, but I think it has to.
The current board is in place until Feb 2023 and yeah maybe they want to keep their hands on the levers of power I don't know.
I'm hopeful however that they do the right thing by the club. Personally I think Lynne should step down in 2023.

Steve is a quality human, a no-nonsense leader and a Bankstown boy to boot. Not sure what it would take to prise him away from his role at CA, but raising the profile of those associated with the club at board and exec level would likely be a good thing - not unlike what the Chooks did with another Canterbury district junior - Mark Bouris.

good point
Roosters board - only 1 ex player
Bunnies - 0/1 - not sure if one of the names is former player
Sharks - 1
Panthers 1
Tigers - 0
Eels - 0
Daragons - no idea but full of old boys
Raiders - 0
Storm - 0
warriors recent change of ownership
Broncos ~ 1
Cowboys - 0
Dogs -3
Titans - private ownership
Newcastle - owned by west’s leagues
Manly - private ownership

whilst number of ex players as board members doesn’t correlate to success , it would seem tho that the two clubs that are run by old boys / ex players have been duds past few years , dogs and dragons .
