From Sporting News:

One of the longest-running jokes across NRL circles is that the Sydney Roosters are over the salary cap - or the 'salary sombrero' as some may call it.

But apparently, that isn't exactly the case.

Following season-ending injuries to Victor Radley and Sam Verrills on Friday night in their win over the Dragons, the Roosters actual position within the salary cap has reportedly been revealed.

With the club now without a back-up hooker for Jake Friend, they may need to look elsewhere for a short-term option - and it looks like they may be able to afford it.

Senior reporter Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield told Big Sports Breakfast on Monday morning that the Roosters are in fact $400,000 under the salary cap for this season.

"I spoke to the club yesterday and asked if they would bring in (someone)," he said.

"You won’t believe this – the Roosters are $400,000 under the salary cap for this year. I’m telling you, it’s a true story.

"You forget about the players they release each year."

It can't be true, can it?

Well the club has lost Cooper Cronk, who was reportedly on $1 million a season during his two-year stint at the club.

Latrell Mitchell and Blake Ferguson have also both departed in the past 18 months, while the influx of younger players such as Radley, Sitili Tupouniua and Nat Butcher may help the cap.

But it is the revelation from Rothfield that James Tedesco and Luke Keary are both on less than many may believe.

"What do you think Tedesco and Keary are on? Tedesco came over for about $900,000 and Keary came over for $850,000," he said.

"They are now in the process of upgrading and extending their deals, and they will both go over $1 million.

"You want to know what the Morris brothers are on – combined, less than Blake Ferguson used to be on.

"What do you think Kyle Flanagan is on? He's on $275,000."

With such a talented roster and two premierships in the past two years, the Roosters are obviously going to have to lose players.

But if you look back through their success in the past decade, that isn't exactly uncommon for the Tricolours.

While most fans will continue to joke about the club's salary cap, perhaps it is just good management from Trent Robinson, Nick Politis and all involved at Bondi.

It must be nice to cheat the cap with impunity and not only have none of the major media outlets question it, but to also defend the club constantly and claim that they have ample cap space to sign players.

What a corrupt competition. What puzzles me most is that none of the other 15 clubs say or do anything about it.

Since the Roosters signed Schubert to work at the club after leaving the NRL as the "cap auditor", they have taken their cap cheating to another level.

"
Gee I needed a good laugh to brighten the day and this provided it.

I seem to remember that towards the end of the stay of Blake Ferguson at the Roosters he was on a modest salary due to shall we say off fields indiscretions that the Roosters over looked on the basis he was paid less. Buzz reported the fact in 2017/18 that Fergo was on a reduced contract ( prior to that on 450K per season) because of the exact same reason I just quoted and he would not have signed on with Parramatta for anything less than what he was getting at the Roosters. He signed on at Parra for 500k per season which means the money he was earning at the Chooks was less than that and they have applied the cost of his last deal with them as the total of what they are now paying the Morris boys. When the two Roosters players went down I said to hubby that it won't be an issue for the Roosters to simply go out and buy a hooker or at least some type of replacement for them just as they did with Billy Smith the centre who is missing due to injury. Don't forget that as the injuries occurred in a normal club match there is no type of compensation for their contracts in the salary cap.
Working on averages they are telling us that the Morris boys are being paid less than 500k between them per season. Yes, maybe a bit of money put in by the Sharks but honestly??? Don't forget that it is the second year of his deal so he would still be on a decent wage.

No way surely they must be 1.2 million under the cap? They had an injury to the young centre Smith and were able to sign J Moz on peanuts. Im sure they will be able to get a couple of rep players to replace Radley and Verrills.

Just a joke and one of the main reason so many fans are turning away from the NRL. And the arrogance of Robinson all the time, like he is a super coach. My aunty could coach the Roosters and they would win a comp.

Tired of all this bullshit that the NRL allows to happen. Counting the days til the NFL starts.

The only thing factual about that article is that the Morris boys are actually on less than $550k combined for season 2020.

Unfortunately the NFL will be months and months away with how bad the Covid spikes are there daily. Of course it would help if they kind of took the whole thing seriously.

Unfortunately the cap will only ever be a soft cap whilst unofficial 3rd party deals exist.

Nasheed here,
Why is everyone so surprised?

Roosters dont actually have alot of stars on big green.

Bmoz was on virtual minimum wage
Josh be cheap
Verrills nothing two years ago
Aubusson cheap

Only Cordner, Tedesco, JWH would be on decent dollars, and keary will get an upgrade this season or next, with Cronk dollars. Tedescos contract is heavily topped up by a very wealthy businessman named Arthur Tzaneros who's in the transport game amongst a few other industries, whom i know personally and has even given me free tickets to games.

They just get the team composition perfect. We dont. We have ball players in our backline passing to little guys.

Crichton was signed for 800k plus. Teddy would be on 900k. Keary is on 700k or more. JWH is on 600k. Taukeaiho is on 500k plus. Friend is on 500k plus. Cordner would be getting 700k or more. Manu on 500k or more.

Factor in Radley and Tupou who would be on at least 400k after both being upgraded and that's $6 million on ten players.

Which leaves $4 million for their other 20 players which includes Flanagan, Aubusson, Liu, the Morris Brothers, Ryan Hall, Butcher, Collins and Tupouniua..

So it's pretty obvious that all of that doesn't fit under the cap.

Interesting about Tzaneros who is listed as a long term partner...just as well he is not listed as a partner of the club ( they are a player partner and listed as such ) otherwise his heavily topped up contract for Tedesco would be illegal under cap rules....The fact that these sponsorship can be unlimited is wrong and is the reason that the playing field is nowhere being level. The Roosters in fact for all their partners and sponsors have the lowest amount of TPA's registered with the NRL.....

ACFS is a proud long-term partner and supporter of the Sydney Roosters. We are also pleased to announce a personal sponsorship of new Roosters recruit and NSW Blues fullback, James Tedesco. We wish James and the Roosters the best of luck for upcoming NRL season!

What players can earn outside the salary cap
Unlimited - Players can earn unlimited amounts from corporate sponsors who are not associated with the club and who do not use the game's intellectual property (no club logos, jerseys or emblems) provided these are pre-approved by both a Player’s Club and the NRL. These agreements may not be negotiated by the club as an incentive for a player to sign a contract, nor can they be guaranteed by the club.
