Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns has questioned the punishments handed down to Latrell Mitchel, Josh Addo-Carr and Nathan Cleary in the wake of the Bulldogs schoolgirl scandal.

Mitchell, Addo-Carr and Cleary all escaped playing bans after breaking laws amid the coronavirus lockdown, but received large fines for flouting social distancing restrictions.

Following the fines, a number of pundits have raised the question as to whether the trio got off lightly.

Canterbury Bulldogs duo Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera had their NRL contracts deregistered last month after the pair were caught up in a schoolgirl sex scandal during a team trip to Port Macquarie in February.

Johns admitted he's been inundated with questions asking how the punishments handed down to the trio over their COVID-19 breaches stack up against the sanctions the Bulldogs players were hit with.

"Some people have asked me, what's the difference between what Latrell and Josh have down, and what the Bulldogs players have done – What's worse?" Johns told Wide World of Sports' Freddy & the Eighth.

"The Bulldogs players have had their contracts torn up. Where one's a criminal matter and the other one's more of a moral issue.

"A lot of people are asking questions about that."

The Newcastle great also admitted the issue of mobile phones needs to be addressed once again.

Johns says the players let down ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys who's been in the public eye over the past month, attempting to relaunch the NRL season amid ongoing conversations surrounding appropriate coronavirus measures.

"Initially when I saw it, I thought how stupid," Johns added.

"Once again the mobile phone comes into play which we've spoken about at length. Turn your phone off, get rid of it – whatever you're going to do with it, whatever you're getting up to.

"We've got some people in the game, particularly Peter V'landys who's putting his neck on the line, he's putting his integrity on the line to get us back playing before anyone in the world.

Bloody Oath & it had to be said publicly..

Our players sacked etc over a non criminal offence - but down to moral standards & code of conduct etc..

While the other 3 clowns (with one blatantly lieing about it) break various criminal laws during the deadly pandemic thats killed 3mill world wide & caused health & economic devastion.. there actions could have led to the spread of this terrible deadly virus..

Whats worse - i think its pretty clear..

We cop it Doggy style once again..

The first part is word soup from John's. He doesn't actually give a clear opinion, just repeating the questions he's supposedly been hearing from fans. But the second part of what he says actually pissed me off. The issue isn't that they're using mobile phones, it's that they've broken rules and held themselves above the game. Don't act like fuckwits in the first place and it makes no difference if you have your phone present. He's pretty much promoting a don't get caught fucking up stance. Not the right message in my opinion.

These two got deregistered for breaching the code. Bronson xerri dopes and he is talked about missing 4 years. Umm is doping not a breach of the sport?? And why are people feeling sorry for him. Johns was saying how he is young and made a stupid mistake - someone must have gotten in his head. Well we could have said the same thing about okunbor and chn. As usual the nrl not making a big fuss when it doesn’t involve the dogs

Clutching at straws there. Xerri is gone for 4 years. These ***** worry that he is gonna off himself.

What they don't know yet are the very very loud rumours of this **** doping since 15s.

His brother and extended family getting done for being part of a steroid and other drug ring.

The two incidents have nothing in common and can’t be compared in any way much less a suggestion of a deliberate attempt to punish the Dogs more than any other club.

What's doing with the appeal anyway? It's been weeks since there's been any mention of it.

Guessing the NRL have been a little pre-occupied with other matters. Whilst the appeal will be heard by an external QC it is a process of the Integrity Unit and with many NRL staff still stood down and V’Landys commitment under the new broadcast deal to slash $50m of costs from NRL HQ, this is unlikely at the top of the pile of things to do.

Still you'd think the players would be pushing hard to get it done ASAP. It's still a long time frame considering how quickly they have managed to deal with other IU issues.

They could well be but don’t know how much leverage they nor their representatives have on the process as well as others involved.
