Canterbury have locked down a piece of their playmaking puzzle, inking a new deal with young playmaker Brandon Wakeham - but where does it leave their pursuit of favourite son Josh Reynolds?

Canterbury have agreed to terms with rising playmaker Brandon Wakeham and the club is to announce his signature by the end of the week.

The rising playmaker, who was off-contract at the end of this year, will stay on at the Bulldogs until the end of 2022.

The retention of Wakeham, 21, hasn’t dented Josh Reynolds’ chances of coming back to Belmore in 2020 even though negotiations between the Bulldogs and the Wests Tigers have now become protracted.

Wakeham has been a retention target since before Bulldogs coach Dean Pay sounded out Reynolds for a potential homecoming.

It’s believed the sticking point between the two parties is how much of Reynolds’ salary each club is willing to pay. Reynolds is contracted to earn around $750,000 next season.

Like Reynolds, Wakeham is a Bulldogs local junior, and is currently in a three-way battle with Jack Cogger and Lachlan Lewis to partner Kieran Foran in the halves when the Bulldogs resume their season on Sunday May 31 against the Manly Sea Eagles.

Wakeham’s fresh signature indicates he has edged past Lewis and Cogger in the halves battle, especially after coach Dean Pay benched halfback Lewis was bench after 55 minutes into the clash against the North Queensland Cowboys in round two.

Foran, who has fully recovered from a shoulder injury suffered while playing for New Zealand last November, is expected to line-up in the no. 7 jumper in round three against his former side, the Sea Eagles.

The Kiwi international has so far passed all physical and contact work after returning to full training but needs a final approval from his specialist before he is given the green light to return to the field.

Wasn’t he going to the Tigers in a swap with Reynolds? :yum:

Nice work by the club, hopefully develops nicely in that time and gets a 4 year extension next time....
He was indeed, if you were to believe nasheed and his thousand other alias's

Good news. Despite what the article says, let's hope this puts an end to the Josh Reynolds rumours.

Glad the club is taking this option over a short sighted signing like Reynolds.

He will never get a better chance to cement himself in the halves then he will now.

I wonder where this leaves Cogger? You'd have to think he is long odds of being here in 2021 now.

He was voted one of the best young prospects,a couple of years ago let's hope now that his future is sorted,he can start producing some of that form,as far as Josh Reynolds,I believe the tigers are only willing to contribute,$150k of Reynolds $750k,the dogs are apparently not willing to pay any more, than $400k,and I think that's a fair sum,for josh at the current stage of his career

Good news, i guess if we could get reynolds for $400 k cogger would more than likely not get resigned.

So i guess in the wash up do we spend $400k on reynolds.
Or do we resign cogger on argument sake say $300k.
I guess id probably take josh on for that reason.

Or you could move on from both and bring Bailey Biondo-Odo into the top 30 or sign a new young half.

Massive. I didn't think he'd re-sign until he got a proper opportunity.

Well done on Wakeham. Why are the media making it seem like we should be taking in Reynolds. Dumb fuck Tigers be stuck with him!

Also regarding Reynolds, it makes more sense for him to be our hooker/utility and back up half then coming back to play in the halves. Yeah, I hear what people are saying regarding Reynolds not being a hooker, but he's still much better then what we have and has other values that are important for a team. For the right price, which is why we haven't signed him yet, he'd be a good addition. I would of went after other targets myself and even still I'd rather Friend, but after that there's next to nothing.

I love that it is a TWO-year deal and they aren't laying out ridiculous 5+ year deals.

Good news.. Hopefully Wakeham makes the most of his opportunity and is given an extended run.. Hopefully they stay away from trying to sign Reynolds.
