The way I see it the more appropriate question was why were all of the staff stood down. They were obviously eligible for JobKeeper, so pass on the $1500 a fortnight and pay the media staff to keep on generating content, even if it was only 2 or 3 days a week. Simple stuff like a 2 minute Skype with a handful of players every week on what they have doing, how they are keeping fit, how their family is handing the isolation etc. It would have been interesting to see a Skype session with Elliott on wrestling NT crocodiles as his fitness regime. It wasn’t that hard to at least try and keep fans engaged so we are ready, fired up, when the footy resumes or more inclined to donate if that was the objective.
Unfortunately this is far from the only example of our media department letting the team down. It’s by some margin our weakest area of non football contribution, they constantly miss opportunities to generate positive publicity and, much worse, they leave negative media unchallenged. At the very least whenever there is negative press they should be counteracting it with a positive story. I hate the pricks, but one thing the Chooks do is manage the media, been doing it for decades. We need to really step up our media game, their consistently poor performance affects us in so many areas.
