A return to the centres looms for Latrell Mitchell after an underwhelming fullback display that prompted Phil Gould to claim the South Sydney recruit wasn’t ready to play NRL let alone wear the No. 1 jersey.

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett admitted he may have to axe Mitchell at fullback for next week’s blockbuster clash against former club Sydney Roosters after the NSW representative failed to shine for the second straight match in his new position.

Mitchell showed flashes of brilliance but was ultimately shifted back to the centres with Alex Johnston finishing the game in the custodian role in their 22-18 second round loss to Brisbane on Friday night.

Bennett admitted it may be a sign of things to come.

“We’ll sit down and have a think about it,” Bennett said when asked if Mitchell may revert back to his regular centre spot against the Tri-Colours.

However, Gould was more forthright about Mitchell after watching the 22-year-old manage just 74m from seven runs – along with two errors – against Brisbane. Indeed Gould didn’t hold back, claiming Mitchell had been found wanting after leaving the star-studded Roosters in the off-season.

“I don’t think he understands what it takes to be a great footballer,” he told Nine Network.

“He’s a wonderful talent, but it’s the old adage – does the player make the team or does the team make the player?

“He is of no value to this team the way he is at the moment. “He hasn’t got the knowledge to play fullback. He hasn’t got the intensity to play fullback so Latrell is on a real learning curve.” Gould even suggested Mitchell’s game may fall apart entirely over the next 18 months if left unchecked.

“I am worried about Latrell and his football,” he said.

“And unless he is mentored by the right people through this period it could all come unravelling for him in the next 18 months judging by what I am seeing right now.

“He is not ready to play NRL football the way he is and certainly not to play that position (fullback).

“When people tolerate what Latrell is doing now Latrell will keep doing what he is doing now – someone in his life has got to pull him into line.” But Bennettt said he had faith in Mitchell making it as a fullback – eventually. “He’s a wonderful centre but I know he can play fullback – it’s always going to take time,” he said.

I was one of those people for sure. Thank God Lynne made the right call on this.

He would have been Foran V.2
Did we dodge a bullet or what!

Where are the people that wanted to give him the Leagues Club and pay "overs" to get him here now!

I wonder if he's going to follow in the footsteps of Chris Sandow and just stop putting in now that he's got a big money deal.

As I said in the other thread, I always thought it would take him time to adjust but didn't think he would look this bad.

Clearly his attitude, fitness and work ethic are horrible. Latrell isn't doing himself any favours at the moment and only has himself to blame as this was a disaster of his own making.

For perspective though, most big money or high profile signings or re-signings genuinely backfire. Look at Hunt, Taylor, Bird, Crichton, Foran etc. But it's two games in and hopefully Mitchell uses this as the ultimate wake up call. If he doesn't, he could end up wasting a tonne of talent.

When Latrell was available I thought he was the best left strike centre in the game. My opinion on that hasn't changed. To be in the conversation of signing him (and anyone at that level) you're going to have to pay overs as a club like us. I didn't really care if we had to play him fullback or centre. Playing Latrell fullback would just be trying to justify the price tag. I still think if you give him a full year at fullback and keep pushing him he can only improve. He still ball plays better than DWZ just saying.

I dont actually think souths gave him the millions he was after. I read that this yesr would be a lot less and if he performed they would talk business.

Its not looking good for the young fella.

The thing is after all that negotiating and media circus he didn't get himself that much more than he was on at the Roosters last season. He could have earned way more with the Tigers. I think this years deal with Souths is for 650k. And it's a team option for the second season for a couple hundred thousand more. At this rate I dare say Souths won't be exercising that option.

In the sheds after the game he had his shirt off, he looked over weight.
He looked nothing like an elite athlete

Pretty soon into the negotiations i thought it would be a bad idea to sign him. Not to sughest he cant come good, but the negotiations circus put him in limbo, and certainly affected his training and mental state, when he should have been training his ads off so that he could actually manage the aerobic aspects of playing fb.

Latrell will just be a flash in the pan. Doesn't have the attitude to be an elite football player. I can see him, if continually playing bad and copping criticism from people, sooking and walk away from the game.

I was adamant that he is not worth close to a million dollars a season.

He sooks about everything. Cronk commented on him and Latrell had to go and post about it later talking shit. Today Cronk said he'd been doing the job for two weeks and he's already getting into fights with ex teammates :tearsofjoy:
