DHAKA (Bangladesh) — A massive coronavirus prayer session with tens of thousands of devotees sparked an outcry in Bangladesh Wednesday (March 18) as the South Asian nation reported its first death from the global pandemic.

Local police chief Tota Miah said some 10,000 Muslims gathered in an open field in Raipur town in southern Bangladesh to pray "healing verses" from the Koran to rid the country of the deadly virus.

"They held the Khatme Shifa prayers after dawn to free the country from the coronavirus," Mr Miah told AFP.

Organisers claimed the number of worshippers was 25,000.

He said organisers did not get permission from authorities to hold the session.

Photos of the gathering was widely shared on social media, with commenters slamming the massive rally.

Authorities have already shut schools and asked locals to avoid large gatherings in an effort to halt the spread of the disease.

"Unbelievable how they even have done it without notifying the police? They will be held responsible if anything happens to the people in the region," Abdur Rahman wrote on Facebook.

Despite the appeal from authorities to avoid crowded public areas, many took the opportunity to head to tourism sites.

Police said they had to close two beaches, including one at Cox's Bazar, the main resort district of the country, and which is home to nearly one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

A senior leader from the ruling Awami League, Obaidul Quader, said a lockdown might be required to contain the virus.

"If necessary, Bangladesh will be shut down. It'll be enforced where necessary. People must be saved first. We'll do everything for that," he told reporters.

The number of positive cases in the country of 168 million people stands at 14, although some medical experts fear not enough tests were being conducted. AFP

So if this virus wiped out half the planet and people stopped overrelying on cars and factorys slowed down the whole global warming reduction can work ?
Yep. Pollution is already massively down in China. Electricity emissions will still be there but less traffic emissions and office aircon is a massive part of emissions. There's also less production going on as there's less demand for certain things (excluding TP)

So realistically emissions are being cut drastically right now.

Waiting 45 minutes for toilet paper to leave empty handed... Hmmmm who didn't plan and take my advice weeks ago.

Aldo stores not even opening yesterday and today.

They say there is plenty stock, so where is it?

Those that stockpiled are 3 steps ahead, those that didn't, the know it all Johnny's and those with heads in the sand have egg on their faces

One thing i've noticed is that we have all become, rightly or wrongly, paranoid whenever someone does or has something that we normally would think nothing of.

I've had a bit of a cough for a week or so. It's now done its usual progression from dry to chesty, so i know i'll be right soon, but i've been scared of coughing as i'm worried about how others think around me. Just in our office today, one of my guys says he has a bit of a headache and so won't come in. God, when i was his age, i had a headache most mornings due to the beer i'd sunk the night before.

I have to leave now to pick up my son from childcare as he has a cough (i'm guessing the same one I had). He's been pretty put in isolation. This is in a centre where its weird for kids not to have runny noses.

and we face several months of this....
