Canterbury officials will meet in the next 72 hours to discuss the immediate playing futures of Corey Harawira-Naera and Jayden Okunbor as another club sponsor, MPA, walked away because of the Port Macquarie sex scandal.

On another tough day for the Belmore club, boss Andrew Hill was also forced to inform the NRL integrity unit a video allegedly involving Harawira-Naera with a young female patron in a toilet cubicle at a Port Macquarie hotel was not him.

Canterbury kick-start their season against bitter rivals Parramatta on Thursday night but all the talk was about the expected penalties for Harawira-Naera, 24, and 23-year-old Okunbor.

The pair broke club protocol by bringing women back to their hotel room on a trip to Port Macquarie, and in Okunbor's case fraternised with a student he had met at a high school earlier that day.

While it is expected Okunbor will be sacked, Canterbury are said to be just as furious with Harawira-Naera and would not object to the NRL coming down just as hard.

Harawira-Naera and Okunbor have since engaged lawyers and reached out to the Rugby League Players' Association as they plead with the NRL not to be deregistered.

They have until 5pm Tuesday to respond to their show-cause notices, and the Dogs are eager for an outcome either way within 48 hours before they host North Queensland next Thursday night.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg - not the Bulldogs - will make the final decision on Harawira-Naera and Okunbor's playing futures.

The NRL told club bosses during the Nines in Perth it was their intention to now enforce penalties for player misbehaviour rather than leave it to the clubs.

The most-recent high-profile case featured Canberra, who offered to suspend Jack Wighton for six matches after a drunken assault, only for the NRL to controversially increase the penalty to 10 matches.

Canterbury can still sack Harawira-Naera and Okunbor, but are prepared to be guided by Greenberg.

There are already plenty of questions being asked about whether Canterbury could yet be entitled to salary-cap relief should the NRL deregister the pair.

If they are deregistered, NRL sources said both players will be denied receiving lifelines at rival clubs for this season.

Harawira-Naera is a top-class Kiwi back-rower and would have no shortage of suitors if he was sacked. The fact he did not meet the girl he corresponded with at a school visit is expected to work in his favour.

A Bulldogs source was forced to shoot down suggestions Okunbor had landed in some trouble in Perth during the Nines.

Canterbury have just started a partnership with the NSW North Coast Country Rugby League, which includes trips to Port Macquarie. The Herald was told by local league officials late Thursday they would wait to see what punishment the NRL dished out to Harawira-Naera and Okunbor before they reviewed their current arrangement with Canterbury.

Harawira-Naera and Dogs junior Okunbor, who is of Nigerian heritage and made his NRL debut last year, have been stood down from all training and game-day commitments.

IF both these players are indeed sacked by the Bulldogs then the NRL should take a firm stance and not allow any other NRL team to sign them either. Surely there'd have to be a period of time they would have to sit out of the game or it'd just be a slap in the face of Canterbury.

It does say that there would be no life lines from any club for the rest of the season.

CHN will stay I think, unless both go.

whatever needs to happen and is decided in the best interest of our club is the most important.!!! No player is worth more or bigger than the bulldogs club/family/culture.

CHN is a grub. He was a grub at Penrith and is lucky more didn't come out of the Panthers sex videos fiasco. A lot of the Panthers players were dirty on CHN and wanted payback. I've been told some things from relatively good sources who have dealings with the club and CHN is nowhere near the clean skin he has made out to be.

If the club did indeed fuck him off, we'd be better for it in the long run.
