The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has given final approval for the “Captain’s Challenge” to be used in the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership Season after successful trials.

The NRL today advised all clubs the Captain’s Challenge would be used from the opening round of the competition after the proposal was successfully used by teams in the All Stars and Charity Shield matches.

NRL Chief Executive Todd Greenberg said the Commission had been pleased with how the system operated during trial matches and in consultation with the Football Department had approved its implementation.

“This is an exciting innovation for our game,’’ he said.

“It will add an additional layer of excitement, unpredictability and tactics to matches. Most importantly though, it provides an opportunity for a wrong decision to be overturned.”

Mr Greenberg said the implementation of the Captain’s Challenge was an example of the game listening to fans.

“At the end of last season, we conducted a fan survey and the biggest issue they raised was the impact of an incorrect decision on the game,’’ he said.

“The Commission has listened to our fans, taken on board what they said and brought in an innovation which gives clubs the opportunity to overturn a wrong decision.”

NRL Head of Football Graham Annesley said he was pleased with how the system worked in recent weeks and would continue working with clubs to ensure all captains were clear on the system.

“There were multiple Captain’s Challenges on the weekend and the system worked well, with feedback from our broadcasters also positive,’’ he said.

“We have spent a lot of time explaining the system to our clubs, players, media and broadcast partners and that will continue in the lead up to Round One.”

How it works:
* Only a captain or nominated co-captain can challenge a decision. Should the captain or co-captain be off the field, another player can be nominated to take his place.

* Each team is allowed one unsuccessful challenge per game.

* The only decision that can be challenged are ones which involve a structured restart of play (e.g penalty, scrum, drop-out, etc.)

* Challenges will not be permitted where the referee allows play to proceed.

Last month the NRL released an explanatory video to give all fans a clear understanding of how the system worked.

Don’t know if I like this or not.
Sport needs technology but the way the game is going it’ll be the NFL before too long - too technical and too slow.
I guess we’ll see...

Im sure that it will be exploited, but drom a bulldog dan perspective where most of us feel that we dont get the rub of the green from the refs, this can only help us, and put the onus on the ref to make the right call and not play favourites. So this is a win for me.

Fair call mate. Might not be popular with Gerard Sutton :-).
Will wait and see before I judge it...

Knowing the nrl, we'll successfully challenge three awful calls in a row, next week the captains challenge gets mysteriously scrapped

I like anything that exposes fraudulent ruling and anything that keeps the bastards honest. However i can't help but to wander if there will be betting agencies who cash in on this and declare new exotic bets on if when who why how it occurs. Let's wait and see.

This might stop the odd howler but the biggest problem with NRL officiating is their reliance on making interpretations of the rules instead of just ruling the game.

Although I really do want this strategy to work, I have minimal confidence in its implementation and positive outcome.

Case and point: every Monday morning referee's review of contentious calls that ~90% of the time get walked through by Graham Annesley and reported as "on this occasion we feel the referee's got it right".
The exact situation will occur in real-time on the field, except it will absolve the referee's of any errors, diminishing the outcry post-game.

Also, it would put the onus on the captain to strategically select the calls to review, allowing commentators/fans to assert blame on the captain rather than referees.

I only see this failing. But I want so badly to be wrong.

Another rule Cameron Smith will manipulate in his final season. He'll use a phoney challenge to buy time and give his team a breather.

Hopefully it is his final season. I've got a feeling the narcissistic cockhead will hang around longer than John Farnham.

No, let refs ref and players concentrate on playing.

I'd rather wrong decisions to be made TBH.

It already been used like that in the charity shield game.

Like any new rule, it "could" go either way, but it will more then likely work and in a few years time we wnt know any different.

Calling it now Dogs will be the first team to have a ref uphold an incorrect call despite our challenge

Instead of the bunker announcement "we have a decision going to the board". The NRL should change it to "we have a dud call going to the board".

Maybe. We'll see. I just prefer to see a free flowing game and the more stoppages they put in, the more frustrating it will get.
Rugby has already killed itself with its technicalities and NFL - don't even go there.

True. But the calls can only be made during stoppages anyway.

The rule seems good, but it will still be at he refs discretion and for one reason or another when our boys call for a challenge, they will make out we ran out of time, or some excuse not to let us have the call when it matters most.!!
