DEAN Pay is well on the way to assembling the squad he wants at Canterbury-Bankstown
After spending a number of years cooling his heels as an assistant coach, Pay is now enjoying the role as top dog at Belmore.

The 50-year-old has already learned a thing or two about coaching in the National Rugby League as he prepares for his third season in charge.

"While you're an assistant coach you don't see a lot of things," he told the Port News.

"There are all different parts of the job you need to control and at the moment we've got through a couple of tough periods and come out the other side."

After a year that ended with six wins from their final seven matches, Pay was "looking to keep moving forward" in 2020.

A number of the 'Dogs young brigade are now a year older and have 12 months more experience.

"The group we've built here has involved bringing some of our younger guys through," he said.

"Some of those are up to 30 and 40 games now so they're starting to get into the groove of the week in, week out rigours of NRL footy."

He hasn't quite achieved the finished product, but Pay would have taken plenty of notice of Luke Thompson during St Helens' clash with Sydney Roosters in last weekend's World Club Challenge.
The English front-rower will join the Bulldogs in 2021.

"He's going to be a huge player for us moving forward," Pay said.

"He's doing some good things over there still so we're all excited at the club and all our fans should be too."

Pay believes Thompson will add another dimension to their forward pack.

"He plays at a high level each week, he works hard on his game and looks after himself so he's everything we're looking for," he said.

The immediate focus, however, was on 2020 and how the boys from Belmore could continue to climb up the ladder.

A strong performance in their final trial at Regional Stadium on Saturday will provide a confidence boost ahead of their season opener against Parramatta at Bankwest Stadium in a fortnight.

But Pay knows Canberra will ask plenty of questions.

"We want to try and build some momentum for ourselves and make sure we keep ourselves in the game," Pay said.

"Defensively we want to be really strong; that's our main focus."

Question marks surround the makeup of the Bulldogs halves for round one with Lachlan Lewis, Jack Cogger and Brandon Wakeham all pressing for selection.

Pay, however, remained tight-lipped on who might have the inside running.

"They've all contributed really well, so we'll have a better idea after Saturday and we'll make a decision after that," he said.

Whilst we've had cap issues many of the current players have been signed or re-signed by Pay.

He just needs to think carefully about selections and not be stubborn or stick with players who aren't getting the job done.

Hopefully he settles on a team on form. Last season he went with his gut and chopped n changed. It's an important 6 weeks coming up for Deano.

Do you mean “game form” that we fans see or “total form” that most of which only the coaching staff see?

Not sure what you mean by “gut”, is that where a player is dropped because they turn up to training late, almost every time, with no reason. Or is it where a player turns up to training drunk and/or severely hung over? Or maybe where a player misses his agreed fitness targets and/or weight targets, such that he can’t play the minutes the team needs him to play? Or maybe where the Physio team has set a routine that the player needs to follow in his injury recovery and he ignores them and doesn’t do it?

If that’s what you mean by “gut” then I’m all for it.

I really want Pay to work out for us, i loved him as a player and he seems like "a salt of the earth" type of bloke ..

I really hope he extinguishes any doubts all of have about his coaching credentials this year....

I just hope he is enjoying it after 6 rounds. Having a quick look we only play 3 top 4 teams from last in the first 15 rounds. Souths twice and Canberra at home.......

Not really, people could shit talk Hasler and he was a Premiership winning player and coach, but Pay who has accomplished nothing as a senior coach is meant to be protected? Lol.

Couldn't give a shit what he may or may not see at training as it's entirely possible he can still make the wrong decisions just like any coach. In the end all that matters are results and on field performances and these are things that we can all see and form an opinion on.

It must have been a really bad week for "total form" after Round 2 last year then when Pay made mass changes after 2 losses.............

We are going to be very competitive this season, but from what we have seen nothing much has changed with Cogger / Lewis while Wakeham continues to rise to the occasion whenever he hits the field.. he's the key for us to be a more fluent team with the ball

I'd like to hear Pay mention attack in one of his interviews for once. Our defence was one of the best in the comp towards the end of last year yet it's all he talks about.

Meanwhile they've been one of the worst attacking teams in the two years under Pay. I know what needs more improvement and unless the attack improves, the team won't..

You can't defend much better than they did late last year. But a 14 point per game average for the season is a concern and needs to be improved upon for the team to make the finals and reach their potential.

He has the first half of the season to prove he can coach.

The problem is you don't seem to be able to acknowledge that he can make the right decisions, despite them actually being right, just because they don't agree with your opinion. An opinion which BTW is based on vastly less information than is available to the coaching staff.

Case in point, I bet you still don't agree with CHN being dropped, even though he himself several times has admitted that it was deserved and that it motivated him to higher achievements. Well?
