Harry Grant is set to ask the Storm for a release - and there’s a loophole that could deliver him to Tigers
NRL PREMIERSHIP

The Wests Tigers intend to continue their pursuit of Storm young gun Harry Grant irrespective of the NRL torpedoing the player exchange with Paul Momorovski.

Grant, 22, is widely considered ready to play in the NRL and has spoken publicly about having his “bags packed for the past two weeks” to move to the Tigers.

The Cameron Smith understudy will start in the hooking role for the Storm in Saturday‘s trial match against the New Zealand Warriors in Palmerston North.

Once the trial commitments are complete, Grant is expected to approach Storm coach Craig Bellamy to discuss being released on a loan arrangement to Wests Tigers for 2020.

The Tigers remain intent on giving Grant an opportunity and are still devoid of a specialist no.9 on their roster.

Captain Moses Mbye, Billy Walters and Josh Reynolds will all train and trial in the position but coach Michael Maguire’s preference is to land Grant on a loan arrangement for this season.

The Storm are unlikely to agree to release Grant prior to round one kickoff on March 12 because they would need to find another replacement player to fill their roster quota to 29 players.

But if they agreed to release Grant after round one, the Storm could then take until up to June 30 to fill the spot vacated.

It’s a loophole the Tigers are hoping may land them one of the NRL’s most talked about rookies.

The Bulldogs attempted to land Grant’s signature last year by tabling a three-year deal but the rookie no.9 opted to remain in Melbourne.

Signed at Melbourne until the end of 2022, Grant has a get out clause in his contract for 2021 should champion hooker Cameron Smith play on again next season.

Would've been an awesome signing for us! Tigers must've put a really good offer forward if he's all of a sudden changed his mind.

Is it possible we sneak under the tigers guard and jag him? Not being biased but tigers aren’t really going anywhere they are stuck in the mud. We are slowly moving toward becoming a powerhouse again CHN, DWZ now Thommo plus some great jrs. How good would it be to have him at 9 with Wakeham 7 Averillo 6.

Not really relevant to grant but just read Billy Brittan signed a month train and trial deal with the dragons. Not sure why we didn't sign him

I have heard in the last couple of days that the swap for Momirovski is still on the cards. The issue is the $16k it puts Melbourne over the Cap, which could easily be cured by asking Smith to take $1,180,000 instead of the $1,200,000 in his contract :smirk:

Our club is allergic to having a good number 9. It's why we let Ennis and Cook go and haven't tried to sign Grant or another talented youngster.

Did you miss the part in the article that says we offered him a 3 year deal but he chose to stay at Melbourne or are you just ignoring it to suit your own agenda?

For the Bulldogs not to be going after either Grant or Brittan means we must have something up our sleeve. I'm not a fan of the current board just like I wasn't a fan of the previous morons but in saying that I'm happy to give the chance they deserve and then judge them accordingly at the end of next season.

And you know we haven't tried to sign Grant, how?

They did try and sign Grant early last year. But the club wouldn't budge on him asking for slightly more and he decided to turn down the offer. It was an opportunity missed. As it was with Robson where the same thing happened..

The club should try and pounce now to sign Grant and gazump the Tigers like they did with DWZ. Grant would be a great signing for any club.

Can we afford him with the restricted cap for 2020? Quite sure that’s why we’ve seen selective recruiting for this season. 2021 would be different, but looks like he wants to play first grade this year.

I fail to see how Grant is an improvement on JMK or Katoa. Not for mine.

Surely we have 200-300k left over after missing out on guys like Api, Ese Ese, Leilua and Ramien who were targeted after we signed Stimson and Britt..

Plus, could we get creative with Foran's 350k and say we'll play Grant as a half?

Most clubs have already paid a portion of players salaries for this season so that amount would be as much as Grant could get anywhere else this year, then his deal could increase over the next year or two..

They've limited heavily backended deals in the Des/Eastwood fashion but you can still backend them to a degree..

He's a far better footballer than both combined. JMK was solid last year, especially for someone who was playing out of position. But Grant is a genuine talent of rep ability. There's a reason Melbourne have held onto him this long when he's been third string...

That’s true he’s quoted as saying he’s on minimum wage right now so it should be possible if we were keen.
