Josh Addo-Carr and Bronson Xerri are potential signing targets for cashed-up Roosters.Source: FOX SPORTS
The Roosters have now lost two of the biggest names in rugby league from the team that won the last two NRL premierships.
Multiple title winner and international star Cooper Cronk retired after the grand final, and the game’s most destructive centre Latrell Mitchell was released on Monday to join rivals South Sydney.

It looks like the Bondi club looking much weaker on paper, but on the flip side the dual departure frees up plenty of cash for the Chooks to splash.

Cronk’s exit should add about $1 million onto their 2020 cap, while Mitchell would have been earning $550,000 this year according to multiple reports.

Factor in a few upgrades to certain players and it should leave the Roosters with anywhere upwards of a million bucks left to spend for the coming season.
HOW DO THEY SPEND THE CASH?

There’s a couple of re-signings and contract upgrades on the cards for existing Roosters players.

It’s understood Luke Keary, Victor Radley, and Joey Manu have all already been afforded some extra cash on the back of standout 2019 seasons.

Co-captain Jake Friend is off contract this year and will be working on a new deal. Veteran winger Brett Morris is also off contract, although could retire at 34 years of age by season’s end.

Young spine players Sam Verrills and Kyle Flanagan will also be eyeing potential salary upgrades depending how they perform this coming season, while Billy Smith is a contender to start in the backline and will no doubt be given a payrise if he can nail down a spot.

But the Chooks now have more than enough cash to go chase a big signing as well.

The rumours linking Cronulla young gun Bronson Xerri to a move up the Sydney coastline won’t go away, despite the Sharks warning rivals off trying to poach him.

He’s a bright up-and-coming centre and could slot straight into that left-flank position left vacant by Mitchell’s exit.
Xerri is contracted to Cronulla until the end of 2021 but has a close relationship with Flanagan and it’s been reported he is keen on a move to Bondi.

Young Brisbane forward David Fifita remains off contract and has drawn plenty of interest from Sydney clubs, although it’s been reported he is on the verge of inking a new deal with the Broncos.

An interesting one could be Melbourne and NSW winger Josh Addo-Carr, who wants to move home to Sydney and could leave the Storm at season’s end.

He’s been linked to a number of Sydney clubs already.
WHAT’S THEIR BACKLINE LOOK LIKE IN 2020?

We can safely say there’s three players locked into the Roosters’ back five for Round 1.

James Tedesco will be fullback, Joey Manu will be right centre, and Daniel Tupou will be on the left wing.

That leaves a left centre position and right wing to be filled. So how do they do it?

There’s a number of options for coach Trent Robinson to mull over.

Veteran outside back Brett Morris will be hard done by if he’s not in the side somewhere. He would be most comfortable on the right wing - where he won last year’s grand final - but could also fill left centre if asked to.

If he plays on the left side it would leave Ryan Hall, Billy Smith, and Matt Ikuvalu as the contenders to play right wing.

If Morris slots in on the wing then it’s most likely young Smith will get first crack at filling Mitchell’s left centre spot.

Smith is regarded highly by the club and they seem keen to get him in the team somewhere.

Wow, let's all forget that JWH and Takuiaho were significantly upgraded to stay.
These journos need to do some research than plug things out of their arse to make a story. After they pulled the deal off the table of $800K to LM, they said they had no more money and LM was only on $500K this year. In my books, they will be lucky to have $600-$650k...not the $1.3 this idiot is quoting....obviously a Rorter supporter himself.

You forgot Cronk he was on a million but when retired he left 3million in the cap to play with.

Kotoni Staggs is who I would be targetting... He is going to be an absolute weapon and might be open to a move home

Thought you had to spend 95% of your salary cap allocation before a set time?

I can see the point of such policy but at the same time it severely hinders the bottom clubs when you force them to tie up money on shit players.

Uncle Nick will spend the money right. He won't panic buy.

He won't spend 800k+ on Woods or Foran that's for sure.

Front loading contracts for an extra year or so is the counter to that. It allows you to wait for players that you want and you can retain players for cheaper in the following years. It's pretty unlikely that there's no one a club can buy to strengthen their team. If you're a struggling club unless you fluke results you're going to have to entice players with more money assuming there's competition for them. There's no way around it. This is where fans miss how the top teams seem to be over or cheating the salary cap when they aren't, e.g. Roosters, as it's reversed.

I was wondering why it was taking the propoganda machine so long to come out with the "Roosters have a spare $4 million in cap space" articles..

You have to love how these "reporters" get such a hard on writing these articles about the dream teams the Roosters and Souths can assemble, while never reporting on the other clubs struggles and how this negatively affects the competition..

That's some fair and unbiased reporting right there...

Just like the little Mexican girl say's "why not have both"

It is the Rooster we are talking about here, they will find away to fit them both under the cap with money to spare.

Only a Roosters fan could believe that they're not doing something shonky to get around the salary cap. Seriously. They would've paid substantial money to get a seasoned International, Ryan Hall, and he plays Canterbury Cup. It's a fucking disgrace to be honest. Hope the NRL goes belly-up when disgruntled clubs and fans finally have a gutful of this bullshit.

Just like the "cap penalties" for cheating the cap every other year except the year they won the comp. Funny how that all worked itself out again..

Cronk gone = $1m
Tetevano gone = $300K
Mitchell gone = $550K

That's $1.85mill.

We've only extended SST and JWH as at today and they might get an extra $250K each on top of what they already get, so that leaves $1.35 mill still to spend?

End of 2020 we'll lose Maubs, Morris, Hall and probably Friend. I'd be keeping some powder dry for major upgrades to Keary and Tedesco.
