Canterbury showed grit during a late resugurance last season and they'll need to add more defensive starch to compete with the heavyweights in 2020.

Despite rising from the cellar to finish 12th, the Bulldogs gave up both the most overall metres (41,622) and post-contact metres (12,288) in the league last season.

Dean Pay's men were valiant in protecting their try-line – they ranked a respectable seventh for tries conceded – however the fatigue from allowing opposing teams to surge upfield no doubt took a toll.

The amount of post-contact metres could suggest the side's first-up contact wasn't strong enough, they lacked numbers in tackles, and/or their wrestle was poor – therefore hindering their ability to effectively halt a ball runner's momentum.

And as teams were usually able to roll into Canterbury territory with ease, the Bulldogs often had to ruck it out of their own end.

In fact, over the course of the season they spent just 47.9% of time in the opposition's half – ranking 12th in the competition.

They also had the least possession of any team with 48%.

Having frequently been on the back foot it's no wonder the Belmore-based club managed a season-low 326 points.

Limiting the opposition's metres has a correlation to success, with all but one of the 2019 finalists ranking inside the top half in that department. Eighth-placed Brisbane were the outlier.

Our defence improved immensely during the last portion of the season. Hoping this continues from round 1.

Our long kicking game seriously needs improvement. We give away so many cheap metres.

Nothing article really. Nothing we dont know having watched the games. Those stats are average for the year. Our first game we were steam rolled. Lots of changes to the team early in the year, the team wasnt playing as a unit. Anyways, so much happened last year. New year with new hurdles, we'll just have to wait and see where we are at.

Our defence was really passive for a lot of last season. There wasn’t any line speed and we lost the ruck plenty of times so it’s not really a surprise to hear that stat. This is where having so many workers like Tolman, Elliott and Smith bites us in the ass they make plenty of tackles but are rarely dominant.

Because we were no where near fit enough to start the season.

It was the same with Des. It's almost like we trust our last-ditch, scramble defence so much that we don't bother with defensive line speed at the play-the-ball. Continually rucking it out from our own line is a big part of why our footy has been so boring to watch for the last few years.

As sad as it sounds to say this but our defence improved when Lewis came back into the team. Sad because he is meant to be setting up our attack not stiffening up the defence.

Probably won't mean diddly, but at least this article quotes stats and facts.

Pay and all staff, Admin would have, or should have, read it.

Valid points.

And how was our defence early season with him?

I've been saying it for the last few years that our wrestling is the worst in the comp.

Wrestling is everything in today's defence and we are lagging behind by a country mile

Mid field bombs straight to the backline of other team will cause that. Lewis kicking game is shit. The game plan for last few years has been. Bombs on last, run it on the last and that’s only if they don’t drop the ball leading up to it.

There were plenty of matches last season where both Lewis and Foran were making way to many tackles which left them flat as in attack at the back end of the game when we needed points.

Apparently we've been working on our effort in defence and line speed for years.. all comes down to having a shit middle third and defensive structures

Yep, 95% of the kennel know we cant carry so many small backrowers in the 17. Elliot and c smith cant both be in the side. The coach cant see it. Jacko is our small backrower and only one id have in the 17.
Jmk is a small middle too but at least i see him bend blokes backwards, and his 20 kilo lighter than smith and elliot.

Mostly due to a poor long kicking game which allows our opponents to start sets between their 20-40m line. Once you start your sets there it is alot easier to ruck the ball down field and end your set in an attacking situation. We need to have more variety, better last tackle options and improve our kick chase.
