I believe there is a very fine line between "tasteful" and "tacky" when it comes to Christmas lights.

This is what I'd class as over the top:

Had my next door neighbour the other day ask me if I'm ever going to computer control them... he's a programmer and keen to code it all up LOL

I think that the whole Xmas lights things has peaked out - i definitely think there are fewer really elaborate displays in my neighborhood than in previous years.

About 25 years ago in my home town (just before the whole thing took off and shortly after National Lampoons Christmas Vacation),. the richest bloke in town went nuts and did like a 15 minute extravaganza on his roof and garden. As his house was across the road from the local sporting fields, people would park in the car park and spend ages just watching the display. They even did bus tours.

Anyone in NW Sydney, check out 7 Mallee St, Quakers Hill. Guy has been doing it for years, and Police used to shut the road as tour coaches would head there.

Last time I saw it he had a train gogin around the roof and lower storys of house.

SECONDED!!!
Sinister Santa is around, but due to smoke it's impossible to get a good photo of a night currently.

I think a few things have killed christmas light displays:
1. Solar lights - You'd buy them one year and the next they'd be shagged and not work. I tossed all mine out.
2. Old replacable bulb lights - Nobody uses them anymore.
3. LEDs that are stupidly expensive/overpriced. Set of 400 Greens I recently bought (which are hard to find mind you), $49 a box on special and normally $89. Or this other decoration I picked up for $49 on special and normally $120. People just don't have the money with lower wages and higher costs of living these days.

I do it because it's kinda tradition. For as long as I can remember my parents (and even our grandparents) used to light up our places, and I'd help out. Then when I moved on I thought "why not continue spreading that christmas cheer". At our new place the house lends itself to some decent christmas lights potential too. Still an absolute heap more I could do to it, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

How many hours would you say you put into preparation for your display?

Ummm all up probably 2 and a bit days work (that included rewiring one set of lights after putting them up). That's with about 5000 LED lights in our display.

Some of the big ones (and computer controlled ones) though can easily be a month or more setting up.
