Is there any such thing as a friend?

A wise man once said to me "there is no such thing as a friend"

In my earlier days I thought this guy is a little bitter as I have heaps of what I thought to be friends. But he added to his comment, people only act to be a friend because there is something in it for them. Most of the time what you think is a friend is worse than your enemy. At least an enemy keeps their distance where a friend damages from inside in a position of trust.

He went on to say you only know someone's true colours is when you have nothing to offer and need help. See how many of them are too busy at that point.

I have not needed too much help so I wouldn't really know but I'm sure the wise old man makes plenty of sense.

How many friends do you really have? Are they real friends that would give you the shirt on their back, risk injury to keep you safe, genuinely want to see you get ahead, even ahead of them. If there was money between you would they share it? Do they ever say a bad word behind your back or judge you? If they considered moving house would they consider you to be in close proximity or bugger you?

How many friends in your life come and go? They might still be friendly if you happened to see them but are they real friends that make an effort?

Of course people are polite but is it because they need something from you or does a real friend actually exist.

Who needs a true friend when you own your own home (with a manicured lawn)
Buy the freshest prawns, own a Camry and a big branded smart TV?

The peasants will just leech of you :tonguewink:

Can I take it that holltoya and the_chimpster are not best friends ? At least they both size each other up, smack each other face to face...

Friends just disappoint you from a well trusted position, hit you with a cheap shot with your guard down.

I propose a holltoya vs the_chimpster thread.

A battle of insults with the other members decide who delivers the deeper punch.

Start by asking three questions of each other..

Suggested are... Do you own or rent

Do you own a TCL tv

How tall are you

How is it by simply looking at the title on the home screen, I knew who created this thread?

I don't really have any great friends.
I mostly keep to myself.
Its better that way, helps avoid disappointment.

Don't count on anyone.

Most people can count their true friends on one hand.

Anyone who claims to have more than 10 close friends they can count on, are all living in a delusion and have no idea their enemy is closer than they realise?

Indeed.. true friends for myself = 2 and been mates for 27 years .. the rest however are just acquaintances and most probably enemies that stay close lol..!!!

"Friendship is never established as an understood relation.
It is a miracle which requires constant proofs.
It is an exercise of the purest imagination and of the rarest faith."
- Henry David Thoreau

Most 'friends' are akin to a shadow, there when shining your brightest, yet disappear when things get dark.
True friends are akin to stars, not always visible, yet always there, shining their brightest when you're down and out!

I'd rather a few stars than a thousand shadows.

Hardest thing a man ever has to do, is sever a life long 'friendship' once realising the third party is toxic for whatever reason.

I had mates in school who I haven't seen in over 10 years who I'll trust more than most people nowadays.
