A friend of mine is looking for a car. He wants to spend $20,000 and likely to be a used car.

he was ready to buy a Porsche ceyenne turbo but it’s a 2002 model with 138000km on it.

I told him “holy Mary” those km are way too high, especially on a Porsche where the maintenance is about to sting you hard. Imagine changing brake rotors or a worn turbo, easily double his spend just to maintain it.

generally I said cars with over 100,000km are no good anymore. Stay well away.

for $20,000 it’s better to buy a new car that you can really afford , warranty and less maintenance, even a Kia Rio is better than that Porsche ceyenne turbo.

some people wanna be a big shot but spend little. But then won’t let you see their odometer to be embarrassed and everyone see they are scummy. All those high km Porsche or Mercedes and range rovers getting around, people pretending they are big shots with high mileage past their best prestige cars... they are more Kia Rio people. I guess it depends. Cars like Lexus/Toyota etc are usually built pretty well and with the oils/components/maintenance done on them nowadays they should be doing 300,000km with no issues. Highly strung cars probably closer to 200,000 and Porsche usually make their motors pretty bullet proof. Buuuuut...

Get him to find out what a standard Service 1 and Service 2 costs, that might sway him away.

Cars depreciate in price, spare parts don't :-)

What about an 2008 car with 124k on the clock with the engine rebuilt by Walkie at 90k?

I think that's nothing tbh.

PS I'd never buy a Euro with any kms on it.

Actually only Euro I'd buy is a brand new Lambo.

It’s different if you have a car that you bought under 100000km and since ownership ticked over. You know the history and have maintained it

but to buy someone’s 100000km+ car is near suicidal.

the falcons and commodores are a bit of an anomaly. Their big durable motors usually are like new to 150000km and most parts you will find at Woolworths even

I wouldn’t include Hiace’s/Hiluxs in this category. They go forever if serviced right

Isuzu dmax has a b10 rating
Means only 10% of those motors the 4jj1 will need major repairs before 500k...
90% will need none
There bullet proof
Only diesel motor out all the 4x4 utes etc with that rating
Not hilux, bt 50, ranger etc none
The only one....

Diesels are known to give problems, nowhere near the reliability of a big capacity petrol engine

I've found its small cars that usually go early, they tend to overheat quicker especially if you live in QLD.

Always heard that V8s are more reliable than 4s and 6s.

Maybe there is truth to it?

Generally don’t have to work as hard as say a 4 cyclinder
But like anything I suppose a bigger motor won’t have to work as hard as a smaller 9ne therefor life of motor longer
I tend to agree

Depends on the age and the location?

If its like my car a 2002 camry with a little over 107,000km then thats ok.

It was my grandparents car sat in the garage at their home in Georges hall.

They used it mainly in the Bankstown area.
Most of the freeway kms have been clocked up by me.

I say it depends on the year, make, owner and location for me to justify buying a vehicle with that manys kms for the price you've stated!
